The 2021 World Men’s Curling Championship was initially booked to take place in Ottawa, but the pandemic forced the tournament to move to a “bubble” in Calgary. Ottawa hosts its first Curling World Championship at the 9,500-capacity TD Place in April 2023.
The 2022 version of the World Men’s Curling Championship took place at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Sweden defeated Canada in the final last year, beating them 8-6. The win gave the Swedish team its fourth consecutive world title. With the win, Sweden became the first curling team to win Olympic and World Titles in the same year. Canada has finished second to Sweden in three of the four years the Swedish team has triumphed at the World Championship.

2022 World Men’s Curling Championship picks
|To Win 2023 Men's World Curling Champinship|
Sweden has been the dominant force in men’s curling for the past several years. The team has won four consecutive world championships and also claimed gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics. The last time Sweden failed to win gold at the World Men’s Curling Championship was 2017 when they finished in second place to Canada.
Skipper Niklas Edin has led the Swedish team to six world titles. In May, Edin and his 2022 teammates, third Oskar Eriksson, second Rasmus Wrana, and lead Christoffer Sundgren, announced they would be sticking together for at least the next four years in the hope of winning gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina.
The current Swedish men’s curling team has been working together since 2016.
Canada did well in 2022, finishing second to Sweden in the World Championship and taking a bronze medal in the Winter Olympics, but the Canadian team has struggled to get past Sweden and end up back on top of the curling world.
Skipper Brad Gushue was at the helm of the last team to win the Men’s World Curling Championship for Canada in 2017. That team of Gushue, third Mark Nichols, second Brett Gallant, and lead Geoff Walker was the same group that represented Canada in 2022 at the World Championship and Olympics. However, Gushue’s squad lost Gallant in May when Gallant moved to Alberta-based Team Brendan Bottcher. Gallant was replaced by E.J. Harnden. Harnden was a member of the Canadian team that won a gold medal in Sochi in 2014.
The United States curling team fell short of a medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics. The team that represented the US at the 2022 World Curling Championships was not the same team as the Olympics. Despite the change, the United States team fell short of a medal, coming in fourth place to Team Italy.
The last time the US won a medal was in 2016, when the team took home a bronze. The United States has four gold medal finishes. Its most recent world championship came in 1978. The team’s most recent silver medal was in 1981.
With the Swedish team sticking together and having so much success over the past few years, it is extremely difficult to pick against them to win the 2023 Men’s World Curling Championship.
