Perhaps the most important season-long competition in darts, the 2022 Cazoo Premier League Darts tournament is one of the best ways to identify the overall champion in professional darts. This will be the eighteenth edition of the tournament which kicked off earlier this year on February 3rd. Jonny Clayton is the reigning champion of the competition after defeating José de Sousa 11–5 in the 2021 final. With eight players across 17 different venues, this is one of the most spectacular races in sports.
Below, the MTS analyzes who are the key players in contention for the Premier League Darts title in 2022.
Odds to Win Premier League Darts 2022 | |
Michael van Gerwen | +250 |
Peter Wright | +350 |
Gerwyn Price | +400 |
Jonny Clayton | +450 |
No. 1 Contender: Michael van Gerwen (Odds: +250)
One of the most dominant players in the last 10 years, van Gerwen has continued his hot streak into the 2020’s. In 2020, he won his third UK Open and then later that year, won his sixth overall Players Championship. In 2021, van Gerwen was the runner-up at the European Championship when he fell short to Rob Cross in the finals. However, he has had a slow start to 2022, with a withdrawal at the 2022 PDC World Darts Championship after testing positive for COVID-19.
Second Contender: Peter Wright (Odds: +350)
Known for his electric persona and Pitbull entrance music, Wright is riding a huge wave of momentum as of late. Snakebite is the reigning world champion and has won the PDC World Darts Championship in two of the last three years (2022 and 2020). Wright is ranked as the number one player on the PDC World of Merit and is also the reigning World Matchplay champion. Perhaps this is also the year where he performs his signature sidestep dance all the way to the victory podium.
Third Contender: Gerwyn Price (Odds: +400)
The Iceman, Price is making his fourth appearance in the Premier League competition and is ranked as a top-three player on the Order of Merit. While he has only managed a fifth-place finish as his prior best performance in the Premier League Darts tournament, he is a player you can never rule out. Earlier this season at Belfast, Price would rack up two nine-dart finishes in matches against van Gerwen and against Jame Wade in the final.
Final Contender Spotlight: Jonny Clayton (Odds: +450)
Since the start of the 2020s, Clayton has had an impressive run. He won the 2020 PDC World Cup of Darts championship, before winning his first televised singles title at the 2021 Masters. As noted above, he won the 2021 Premier League Darts title and also the 2021 World Grand Prix. Could he continue his streak in 2022? He seems to be showing no signs of slowing down at this rate.
Prediction: A very top-heavy quartet, the Premier League Darts title will come down to a photo finish. So why not ride a hot hand like Wright to the championship.
