Two original six teams meet tonight in Detroit when the Red Wings play host to the Chicago Blackhawks. The matchup between the two longtime foes serves as the nationally televised game on TNT. Tonight’s tilt is the second of two matchups between the clubs for the 2023 NHL season. The Blackhawks defeated the Red Wings 4-3 in their previous meeting of the season. That game took place in October.

With the 2023 NHL season winding down, neither of these clubs has been officially eliminated from playoff contention, but neither the Red Wings nor the Blackhawks look as if they will make the 2023 NHL playoffs. Detroit has the fourth fewest points in the Eastern Conference with 65, while Chicago are in last place in the Western Conference with 49 points. The Red Wings have a 28-26-9 record on the 2023 season. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks are 22-36-5 on the year.

Detroit brings a home record of 15-12-4 into tonight’s game. Chicago’s away record is one of the worst in the NHL this year at 9-18-2.

Chicago Blackhawks breakdown

The Chicago Blackhawks of today look a lot different than the team that started the 2023 NHL season. Chicago GM Kyle Davidson  made nine trades between February 22 and the 2023 NHL trade deadline. The most noteworthy of those moves sent Patrick Kane to the Rangers. Chicago now has 10 picks in the first five rounds of this year’s NHL entry draft.

No player on the Blackhawks has more than 50 points or 15 goals. The team’s total goal output for the year is 158, which is the lowest in the NHL. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks have allowed 225 goals in 2023. The club’s minus 67 goal differential is second worst in the Western Conference.

To make matters worse for the struggling Blackhawks, team captain Jonathan Toews is out of the lineup and struggling with long COVID.

Detroit Red Wings breakdown

The Red Wings are not playing well. The team is riding a six-game losing skid heading into tonight’s game with the Blackhawks. They have been shutout twice during that stretch and limited to one goal in three other games. If there is a team who needs a favorable matchup right now it’s Detroit.

Despite the terrible run they are on, Detroit is still in the hunt for a wild card spot. They trail the New York Islanders by seven points in that race and have two games in hand on the Isles.

The Red Wings recently locked up team captain Dylan Larkin with an eight-year extension worth $69.9 million. Larkin leads the team in points (59), goals (23) and assists (36). The team’s second-highest scorer is David Perron with 39 points.
