Two of the top teams in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division face off tonight when the Carolina Hurricanes start a three-game road trip against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Hurricanes, who were the early betting favorite to represent the Eastern Conference in the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals, are in second place in the Metropolitan Division with a 12-8-0 record. Meanwhile, the Flyers, who were not picked to make the 2024 NHL playoffs, sit in third place in the division with an 11-9-1 record, one point behind Carolina.

There have been some rumblings that the Hurricanes have had a slow start to the 2024 NHL season, but let’s not forget that the club began last year with a 10-6-5 record before finishing the year with a record of 52-21-9 and 113 points. Carolina has played well at home with a 7-2-0 record, but they are below .500 on the road with a 5-6-0 mark.

The Flyers have been a surprise early in the 2024 season as many prognosticators picked the team to finish at or near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Things are playing out much better for the team that wrapped up 2023 with a record of 31-38-13. Philly is 5-5-0 at home in 2024.

Carolina Hurricanes betting breakdown

The Hurricanes were one of the more aggressive teams during the off-season, signing Michael Bunting from the Toronto Maple Leafs after he put up 46 goals and 112 points over the two previous seasons. The club also added defenseman Dmitry Orlov and Brendan Lemieux. Those signings added depth to a team that is known for rolling out one of the deeper rosters in the NHL.

Carolina is tied with the New Jersey Devils for the most goals in the Metropolitan Division with 67. However, the team’s goals allowed on the year is also 67, which ranks the club third last in the division, and a far cry from the New York Rangers, who are tops in the division at 45 goals allowed. Carolina has been fairly effective on the power play this year, connecting at a 21.62 percent rate. As for the team’s penalty kill, the Hurricanes are in the league’s bottom half, with a PK rate of 74.63 percent.

Philadelphia Flyers betting breakdown

Judging from where they were picked to finish at the end of the 2024 NHL season, it seems as if team president Keith Jones, GM Daniel Briere, and head coach John Tortorella have the Flyers on the right path early in the 2024 campaign. Philly is in the middle of the pack as far as goals scored this year in the Metropolitan Division with 64, but their goals against of 58, makes them one of only three clubs in the division with a positive goal differential.

The Flyers have one of the worst power plays in the league, connecting on just 10.14 percent of their power play opportunities. Meanwhile, the team’s penalty kill is in the league’s top half, preventing their foes from scoring with the extra man 83.58 percent of the time.

A young core leads Philadelphia. The top three scorers on the team are Travis Sanheim, Travis Konecny, and Joel Farabee. Sanheim has 16 points on the year, while Konecny and Farabee each have 15 points. Konecny leads the team in goals with 11, and Sanheim is tops on the club in assists with 14.

Carter Hart is the Flyers starting goalie. He has a record of 6-5, and a goals against average of 2.53 to go with a save percentage of .911.
