Ryan Garcia vs. Javier Fortuna Boxing Picks

  • Date & Location: Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Calif
  • Time: 9 p.m. ET
  • How to Watch: DAZN

Ryan Garcia and Javier Fortuna were initially slated to meet in July 2021, but Garcia bowed out of that scheduled bout to address his mental health. Garcia was then booked to face Joseph Diaz. Jr. in November, but Garcia had to withdraw from that contest to deal with a wrist injury that required surgery. A year after their first meeting was scheduled to take place, the two 135-pound fighters meet on July 16 at Crypto.com Arena in Las Angeles in a fight that DAZN will broadcast.

Garcia (22-0) last fought on April 9 when he won a unanimous decision over Emmanuel Tagoe. Prior to that outing, the 23-year-old had won five straight fights by knockout. Garcia is the No. 5 rated lightweight boxer according to The Ring.

Fortuna (36-3-1 with two no contests), is coming off a February first-round knockout win over Rafael Hernandez. Prior to that bout, the 32-year-old dropped a unanimous decision to Joseph Diaz Jr. for the vacant WBC interim lightweight title. According to The Ring, Fortuna is the No. 9 rated 135-pound boxer in the world.

Ryan Garcia vs. Javier Fortuna prediction and pick

This is an incredibly interesting and important fight. Garcia answered any questions there might have been about his mental state in his most recent fight. He never overextended himself and never panicked and showed that he is able to go a full 12 rounds. With that, the decision to face Fortuna is a calculated risk.

Fortuna is the best opponent Garcia has faced in his career. He is in the top-10, has championship credentials and has power in his hands. Most importantly, he is a southpaw. That last fact will allow Garcia and his team to determine if he is ready to face Gervonta Davis.

Garcia relies a great deal on his speed and he can fall into the trap of using that speed and forgetting that he has a reach advantage and can use his jab to set up his hooks. Garcia’s speed will allow him to capitalize on the fact that Fortuna can sometimes get reckless with his punches. However, if he gets lazy, Fortuna can connect with power on counters.

I expect Garcia to be very prepared for this fight and I think he beats Fortuna to move on to bigger things.

Pick: Ryan Garcia to defeat Javier Fortuna.

Betting value with Garcia

With Garcia being the big favorite in this one, there is not a great deal of value betting on him just to win. In fact, that bet might be a little dangerous because of how large of a favorite he is. Fortuna is a threat, so there is some value in betting on him getting the upset win. However, I’m betting that Garcia gets the win via decision, so I would look for props on the over/under in rounds and the method of victory.

Prediction: Ryan Garcia to beat Javier Fortuna via decision.

What’s at stake

This is the biggest fight of Garcia’s young career. He needs to win to move onto the next level of competition — and pay — a win against a southpaw hitter like Fortuna could very well set up a fight against Gervonta Davis. Davis is the 27-0 WBA lightweight champion. Garcia has already said he wants to face Davis before the end of 2022. He could get his wish, but he needs a win against Fortuna.

As for Fortuna, a win over Davis will put him back in the mix for a lightweight title shot. At his age, this fight could be the last chance for Fortuna to follow a win with a title shot.
