The oldest golf tournament in the world, The British Open, is on the cusp of returning. The last golf major of the 2022 season is July 14 through 17. 2022 British Open Preview
The Old Course at St Andrews (inside Scotland) is the sight of the major. It’s an important factoid, which is why we’ll begin our preview of the 2022 British Open here. This course has been a rotating host of the event since 1873. This will mark the 29th time Old Course has hosted the famed tournament — more than any other venue.
Besides its old-school look, Old Course is best known for its gently rolling fairways, revetted pot bunkers, and beautiful yellow gorse. It last hosted the open in 2015, an event won by Zach Johnson, who is a longshot to win once more per the oddsmakers. The reigning 2021 champion is Collin Morikawa, though that was at a different venue.
The field will include 156 competitors. However, the field won’t be officially set until Saturday, July 10. Two tourneys — Scottish Open and the Barbasol Championship — will take place that weekend as one final tune-up before the golf major. It must be noted that despite suspensions from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, players who have signed with the LIV Golf Series will be permitted to play in the Open. So expect to see Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and “Lefty” Phil Mickelson, among others, partake in the tourney. Tiger Woods will likely also play and go for his 16th-ever major.
Betting Advice For 2022 Open Championship
We have three pieces of advice for the 2022 Open Championship. One player to pick straight-up, another to sort of choose, and a final to avoid altogether. Let’s jump right into:
Take Spieth To Win The Open Outright
If there’s a tourney where Spieth brings his A-game to, it’s the Open. The last time the tourney was at the Old Course, he finished tied for fourth — only one shot outside the eventual playoff. He followed that with a straight-up win in 2017 and another second-place outing last year. This run is giving us all the confidence we need to make Spieth our favorite pick to win The Open outright.
Our confidence has only grown given Spieth’s recent form. He has gained driving distance on the field in 14 of his last 16 events played. Better yet, Spieth ranks third among all PGA Tour players in strokes gained over the past 24 rounds. ALL the momentum is on Spieth’s side and we’re riding it to the bank.
Temper Expectations For Betting Favorite
Nevermind that Rory McIlroy hasn’t won a major championship in eight whole years, the top online sportsbooks can’t stop making him a top betting contender. Here again, McIlroy is the odds-on favorite to win straight up, which is somewhat justified.
He’s had a mostly strong 2022 campaign, especially as of late. Here’s where McIlroy has finished the past seven events: T19, T5, 1, T18, 8, 5, and 2. That’s five top 10s in seven starts, including a win at the Canadian Open. Moreover, McIllroy has a checkered past at this event, winning it in 2014 and finishing top-5 from 2016 to 2018. But despite all this, we’re advocating for you to skip betting on McIlroy, to win at least.
You see, none of McIlroy’s aforementioned success at The Open came at Old Course. And we’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again: McIlroy is missing that “killer instinct” needed to win. He’s worth a prop bet to finish among the top 10, but an outright win seems unlikely.
Fade Golf’s Best 2022 Player
It’s incredibly fair to say that Scheffler has had the best 2022 season of any golfer in the world. The number-one ranked player in the world has claimed victory four times and placed in the top 10 nine times this year. This run includes a major win at the Masters, plus a second-place outing at the US Open. But despite this, we’re staying far away from Scheffler akin to McIlroy.
Our pessimism for Scheffler stems from his recent play. It’s been far from good. In five of his last seven starts, Scheffler has finished 13th or worse — including missing the cut entirely at the PGA Championship. Scheffler’s putting game has been the culprit of his struggles and we’re not convinced he’s fixing those in time for The Open. It’s best to avoid Scheffler in your bets.
