KC Favored To Strike First

Given that the Chiefs opened as 3.5-point favorites and that Patrick Mahomes is even-odds chalk to win NFL MVP, it makes sense that oddsmakers believe the game will open with a Kansas City passing TD (+225). But what if the Buccaneers win the coin toss? Tampa Bay will no doubt aim to control the clock by running the ball and Leonard Fournette has a touchdown in all three games this postseason.

You also can’t dismiss the possibility of Tom Brady breaking out his patented goal-line sneak on the game’s opening drive. That’s all the more reason to wager on a Tampa Bay rushing TD (+600 at BetOnline) being the first score of Super Bowl 55.

Short Score or Long Bomb?

Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill connected on touchdown passes of 75 yards, 44 yards, and 20 yards in the Chiefs’ 27-24 victory over the Buccaneers in Week 12. Opening the Super Bowl with a 60 to 79-yard bomb would pay off handsomely at +1400, but keep in mind that all five Chiefs’ scores against the Bills last Sunday were passing and rushing plays under six yards.

The Bucs, on the other hand, have made a series of splash plays in their three playoff games, connecting on three passing TDs of 27-plus yards, including Scotty Miller’s 39-yard back-breaker just before halftime against the Packers. Given the arm talent of Mahomes and the fact that Tom Brady makes a point of throwing deep just to prove his detractors wrong, we like the value on a 26 to 39 yard TD (+600 at BetOnline) being the game’s first score.

THE KICKER CLUB

Dan Hanzus, NFL.com writer, podcaster, and founder of the prestigious ‘Kicker Club”, has to be happy with what he’s seen from Harrison Butker and Ryan Succop this season. Through the regular season and playoffs, Butker has driven 29-of-32 field-goal opportunities (91%) through the uprights for the Chiefs while Succop is 36-for-39 (92%) and a perfect 8-for-8 this postseason.

Big-leg Butker has drilled all five of his 50-plus yard field goals this season, but Tampa’s placekicker has only had two opportunities from 50-plus yards to this point. With only one of the two marksmen capable of going deep, we prefer the UNDER (-115 at BetOnline).

Shootout or Defensive Struggle?

Chiefs/Buccaneers opened at 56.5 points and the total has not dipped under 56 on most betting sites. Kansas City and San Francisco failed to hit their 53-point total last season (31-20 Chiefs), but there has been an even split of overs and unders hitting over the past 12 Super Bowls.

Most would expect Brady and Mahomes to put up a combined score that lands between 50 to 56 points (+425) or 57 to 63 points (+450), but the Chiefs have a shutdown secondary (as Stefon Diggs just found out) and the Bucs sacked Aaron Rodgers five times last Sunday and now face a threadbare KC offensive line missing both starting tackles.

We believe Steve Spagnuolo and Todd Bowles’ defenses will put up respectable efforts, landing the point total in the 43 to 49 point range (+450 at BetOnline)
