2021 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Futures: Mac Jones Pulls Away

What a difference a few weeks makes. In late October, Ja’Marr Chase was the overwhelming favorite to win the 2021 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Through seven weeks, Chase, a wide receiver with the Cincinnati Bengals, had 35 receptions for 754 yards and six touchdowns. His average yards per catch of 21.5 led the NFL and those 754 yards were the most receiving yards through seven games in NFL history. Chase’s effectiveness has slipped as of late.

Chase’s statistical decline hit at about the same time that New England Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones found his groove. With Jones leading the Patriots on a six-game winning streak, the No. 15 pick has moved up to a -500 favorite to win NFL Offensive Rookie or the Year. Chase has dipped from -225 to +130.

Chase dips

Don’t think Chase has fallen off so much as Jones has climbed. Chase is still the best rookie wide receiver this season and his 906 yards put him sixth in the NFL in receiving yards heading into Week 13. His eight touchdowns also put him near the top of the leader board. With three players tied with 10 receiving touchdowns to lead the NFL, Chase is in a group of three other players who have eight TDs.

If Chase continues the pace he is on, he will finish the season with 77 receptions, 1,400 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

Mac Jones rises

Mac Jones has started all 12 games the New England Patriots have played this season. He has led the team to an 8-4 record and has them in first place in the AFC East and riding a six-game winning streak. Jones has 2,850 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Jones’ play has earned him a spot among the favorites to win the 2021 NFL MVP and while he’s a longshot to win that award, the Patriots quarterback is the favorite to win the 2021 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

The Patriots and Jones travel to face the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night in Week 13 of the NFL season. Jones has thrown just three interceptions in his past six games. Jones has learned very quickly on the job and he has been a very effective quarterback for the Pats. His completion rate over his past three games has been 82.6 percent, 84.6 percent and 71.9 percent.

Jones isn’t a lock to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, the Pats have two games coming up against the Bills that could make a big difference in where he stands, but if he keeps playing the way he has, Jones will be hard to knock off the top of the leaderboard.
