Six Nations Explainer
Rugby’s greatest annual international Championship began 130 years ago, although the upcoming tournament will be the 25th iteration since Italy joined in 2000. Running from the first weekend in February to the middle of March, each nation plays every other team once for a total of 15 matches.
With home-ground advantage alternating from year to year, France, Ireland and Wales have three home fixtures while England, Italy and Scotland host only twice in 2024. Under the bonus point system, countries get 0 points for a loss, 2 for a draw and 4 for a win. Teams also get 1 point for scoring 4+ tries in a match, and 1 for losing by 7 points or fewer.

France favored slightly
France (+120) is the chalk pick to win the 2024 Six Nations Championship. As the home country this September, they’re also a +275 favorite to capture the 2023 World Cup. Les Bleus claimed the competition in 2022 but fell short in their repeat bid this year, falling to Ireland 32-19 in Dublin. It was their first loss since the summer of 2021.
The French start the tournament against Ireland in Stade Vélodrome, Marseille on February 2 in what is a blockbuster opening game.
Bad luck for the Irish?
The reigning Six Nations champions from Ireland (+135) will host three games in 2024, however, they’ll be on the road against their two toughest opponents, England and France. That’s nothing new for the Irish, who are set to face a nightmare draw in September’s World Cup. They have to advance past South Africa and Scotland in Pool B before taking on New Zealand or France in the quarterfinals.

Other contenders
After being destroyed by France 53-10 in this year’s Six Nations tournament and losing to both Ireland and Scotland, England (+600) will head to the World Cup with new coach Steve Borthwick. Scotland (+1600) hasn’t won the Six Nations since 1999 and Wales is a +2800 longshot despite hoisting the trophy rather recently in 2021.
One has to wonder why Italy (+25000) was ever added to the competition. The Italians have received the Wooden Spoon for finishing last place in 18 of 24 years since 2000, dropping every match 13 times.
Best Bet
We like France (+120), but you might want to hold off on betting them for now. If Les Bleus don’t get the job done at home in the 2023 World Cup, they’ll likely be available at a better price before the Six Nations starts play in February.
