Chase Elliott is the Betting Pick to Win the 2023 Go Bowling at the Glen

  • What: Go Bowling at the Glen
  • Date: Sunday, August 20, 2023
  • Location: Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, NY
  • Time: 3:00 p.m. ET
  • How to Watch: USA

With the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs approaching, points are at a premium for drivers outside the top 16 in the point standings. Included in that group is the third-place finisher of last weekend’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard, Daniel Suarez. With his strong performance in Indianapolis, the driver of the No. 99 Trackhouse Racing Chevy is in 17th place in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series points standings, 10 points behind Ricky Stenhouse Jr. A high finish at this week’s Go Bowling at the Glen road course race could put the 31-year-old in the mix to make the playoffs. Suarez finished the 2022 Watkins Glen race in 5th. He also has a third and fourth place finish on the track since he started competing in the Cup Series in 2017.

Suarez is going to have some stiff competition at Watkins Glen. Three current NASCAR Cup Series drivers have two victories on the 2.45 mile-long road course. Those drivers are Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, and the winner of the last two Go Bowling at the Glen races, Kyle Larson. Bush and Larson are inside the top 11 of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoff points race, while Elliott, who won in 2018 and 2019 and finished as the runner-up in last week’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard is in 19th place with 480 points, which puts him 62 points behind Stenhouse.

Chase Elliott

Chase Elliott is not out of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoff race. The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion missed six races in March and April due to a fractured left tibia he suffered in a snowboarding accident. Elliott, the driver of the No. 9 Chevy for Hedrick Motorsports, was also suspended for one race this season. His 36th-place finish in Michigan didn’t help his situation. However, a runner-up finish in Indianapolis kept him in the mix. Elliott is currently sitting in 19th place in the standings with 480 points.

The 27-year-old is still looking for his first win of the 2023 NASCAR Cup season. With his situation in the playoff standings, Elliott needs to do everything in his power to pick up a win at Watkins Glen, a track where he has two victories. While Elliott has not placed first at the Go Bowling at the Glen race since 2019, he has finished second and fourth in the past two years. Last year, Elliott led the race for 30 laps.

Even if Elliott doesn’t win at Watkins Glen, he should be a betting pick to finish among the top five on Sunday.

Kyle Larson

The driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy, Kyle Larson, is currently in fifth place in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoff standings with 698 points. The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion has won the Go Bowling at the Glen race in the past two years. Prior to his victories, Larson placed sixth and eighth. Like Elliott, Larson is a betting favorite for a top-five finish at Watkins Glen in 2023.

Larson has two wins in 2023, and he is the leading driver on the year with 10 top-five finishes. Larson has not won a road race since his victory at Watkins Glen in 2022, but he finished in eighth place at both Indy and Sonoma this year.

Alex Bowman

If the betting odds on favorites like Elliott and Larson are of no interest to you, and you’re looking for a longshot who might triumph at the 2023 Go Bowling at the Glen, look at Alex Bowman. The driver of the No. 48 Chevy for Hendrick Motorsports is in 20th place in the playoff race with 480 points. Like Elliott, who has the same number of points, Bowman will be racing to win at Watkins Glen. His team has won the past four races on this track, and the 30-year-old could have the car to make a run for the victory in 2023.

Bowman has not finished higher than 14th on this course in the past, so he is a risky betting pick, but he is coming off a fifth-place finish in Indianapolis, and he had his best finish of 2023 at the Circuit of the Americas, where he finished in third.
