Toledo opens as the favorite
Filipe Toledo (+400) is favored to win the Surf City El Salvador Pro. The 28-year-old currently sits in third in the men’s rankings behind fellow Brazilian Joao Chianca (+1000) and American Griffin Colapinto (+450). Controversy erupted on the World Surf League last week when Toledo joined countryman Gabriel Medina (+500) in calling out questionable judging at the Surf Ranch Pro.
Colapinto (+450) ended up winning the WSL’s one-and-only wavepool event. That means he will don the yellow Leader jersey for the first time in his career at “La Punta”. The 24-year-old also clinched his second Champions Tour win at this venue in 2022.

What to look for at La Punta
Stretching for hundreds of yards, Punta Roca contains many sections for maneuvers and airs. Judges will be looking for the full criteria from competitors, with variety and innovation. That means combinations of major maneuvers, barrels, power surfing, aerials, and more.
In addition to trying to lock down a spot in the Final 5 at La Punta, the world’s top surfers are all vying to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics. With 10 menβs and four womenβs spots still up for grabs, the points earned in El Salvador will be crucial in determining who represents their countries next year.

Carissa Moore vs Tyler Wright
Carissa Moore (+350) is coming off back-to-back tournament victories. The five-time World Champion finished a disappointing fifth at La Punta in 2022 after Caroline Marks (+600) defeated her. However, Moore just beat the Californian at the Surf Ranch Pro Final.
Tyler Wright (+450) sits second in the women’s overall standings with her win coming at Bells Beach in April. The Aussie placed fourth at Surf Ranch pro after losing to Moore, her longtime rival and friend, at Margaret River.

Best Bets
Eight-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (+500) won in El Salvador last year, but fellow Aussie Molly Picklum (+600) might be the better bet. The 20-year-old picked up herΒ maiden World Surf League title with a win at the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach in Hawaii in February and currently sits third in the standings.
On the men’s side, JoΓ£o Chianca (+1000) offers too much value to pass up. Currently ranked second in the world, the 22-year-old Brazilian is known as one of the sport’s rising stars.
