Judd Trump
Judd Trump qualified for the Winners’ Group of the 2023 Championship League event by winning Group 4 in early January. Trump defeated John Higgins in the final of that event. Trump is currently the No. 5 ranked snooker player in the world. However, he is coming off a disappointing showing in the 2023 Players Championship. Ali Carter eliminated him in the round of 16 of that tournament.
The 33-year-old does not have a ranking tournament win for the 2022-23 WST season, but he has appeared in the finals of one event, losing the 2023 World Grand Prix to Mark Allen by a score of 10-9. Trump won the 2023 Masters and also placed as a runner-up in the Champion of Champions event, losing to Ronnie O’Sullivan in that event.
Trump has three previous Championship League wins, capturing the title in 2009, 2014 and 2016. Trump did not qualify for the Championship League Winners’ Group in 2022. He was eliminated in the second round in 2021.
Neil Robertson
Neil Robertson has played well during the 2022-23 snooker season. However, the No.4 ranked player in the world has yet to pick up a win this year. Robertson has made it to the semi-final round in four of the nine events he has played in this year, but he has yet to make it to the finals. He did not qualify for the recent Players Championship. His most recent finish was a first-round elimination at the Welsh Open.
Robertson qualified for the Winners’ Group of the 2023 Championship League with a Group 6 win. He defeated Zhou Yuelong in the final of that round.
The 44-year-old Robertson does not have a Championship League title to his name. In fact, he has never made it to the finals of the event. He has been to the semi-finals twice (2010 and 2018). Last year, Robertson withdrew from the event.
Jack Lisowski
Jack Lisowski, the winner of Group 1 of the Championship League, has been watching the Winners’ Group fill up since his victory over Matthew Selt in late December. Lisowski is the No. 12 ranked snooker player in the world.
The 31-year-old Lisowski is looking for the first ranking or non-ranking tournament win of his career. Lisowski is having a career-best season in 2022-23, making the semi-finals of the UK Championship, German Masters and The Masters, but he has yet to make it to the finals of an event this year. He made two ranking tournament finals in 2020-21, but he failed to win either event, losing the World Grand Prix to Judd Trump and the German Masters to Trump as well.
Lisowski made the finals of the 2019 Championship League event, but lost to Martin Gould.
Ronnie O’Sullivan
If you want to make a risky bet for the 2023 Championship League, Ronnie O’Sullivan is the player to bet on. O’Sullivan is the No. 1 player in the world. However, he needs to win Group 7 to qualify for the Winners’ Group. With that, O’Sullivan’s odds to win this event are priced accordingly at +1000. If you think O’Sullivan can win Group 7 and then turn around and triumph in the Winners’ Group in the next days, there is some value in betting him at those odds.
Something to keep in mind is that O’Sullivan has never won the Championship League. In fact, his best event came in 2020 when he was eliminated in the second round.
Best bet to win the 2023 Championship League
Although he has not won a snooker event during the 2022-23 season, I firmly believe that Neil Robertson is due for a breakthrough. With the relatively small — but outstanding field — in the 2023 Championship League Winners’ Group, I believe Robertson will shine and win the event.
Pick: Neil Robertson to win the 2023 Championship League Winner’s Group.
