Magnus Carlsen favored to win 2023 Aimchess Rapid Knockout

  • Magnus Carlsen (+100) is the favorite to win the 2023 Aimchess Rapid
  • Jan-Krzysztof Duda claimed last year’s tournament by knocking off the world’s number one player

After a grueling Play-In round back in June, only eight of 56 players are left in the 2023 Aimchess Rapid. It is the fourth of six events in Chess.com’s $2 million Champions Chess Tour, which is the biggest online tournament of the year and culminates in a live in-person final in December.

World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen is among the competitors who advanced to the five-day online event this July. Will he capture the $30,000 first-place prize? Magnus Carlsen favored

Magnus Carlsen (+100) is the favorite to win the 2023 Aimchess Rapid. Due to missing the ChessKid Cup, the five-time World Chess champion and current world No. 1 had to secure a qualifying spot for the upcoming tournament. Back In June, the Norwegian grandmaster first had to survive a challenging nine-round Swiss event before winning a rapid match against another top-eight finisher. Wesley So (+400), Levon Aronian (+800) and Eduardo Iturrizaga (+5000) were the other three competitors to escape the Play-In.

After qualifying, the four will join ChessKid Cup top-finishers Nodirbek Abdusattorov (+400), Fabiano Caruana (+600), Jorden van Foreest (+1600) and Vladimir Fedoseev (+1400) in the Division I tier of the 2023 Aimchess Rapid.

2023 Aimchess Rapid Knockout

With eight of the best chess players in the world locked in, the Aimchess Rapid Knockout promises to be one of the most-competitive rapid tournaments of 2023. The eight competitors are dueling to qualify for both the end-of-year Playoffs and the Tour Finals in December, when $600,000 will be at stake out of the overall Tour prize pool of $2 million.

Fabiano Caruana, Magnus Carlsen, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov look like the Tour frontrunners at this point in the season.

Missing in action

Hikaru Nakamura is not among the final eight competitors playing in the 2023 Aimchess Rapid. The U.S. star leads the overall Tour points table with 270, followed by Caruana (250), Carlsen (225), and Abdusattorov (200). Last year’s winner Jan-Krzysztof Duda also didn’t qualify for the tournament.

Surviving the Play-In

Magnus Carlsen (+100) barely made it into the eight-player knockout round. He was trounced by his own second, Laurent Fressinet, in the Swiss Play-In before winning four-straight games to advance to Match Play. The world No. 1 was then forced into an armageddon by Ivan Saric.

Levon Aronian (+800) was red-hot in the Swiss Play-in, winning his first five games before defeating Gata Kamsky in Match Play. Also blistering in the qualifier, Wesley So (+400) beat M. Amin Tabatatbaei to advance. Eduardo Iturrizaga is a huge 50-1 longshot to win the event after upsetting Iranian Parham Maghsoodloo in come-from-behind fashion.

Best Bet

Fabiano Caruana is +600 to win the 2023 Aimchess Rapid Knockout tournament despite having the most points on the Champions Chess Tour out of all the competitors. With Carlsen suffering some sloppy defeats of late, we’ll take the U.S. born Caruana to capture the fourth leg of the Tour over the other grandmasters.
