Night Seven of the 2023 Premier League Darts tournament saw a surprise as Michael van Gerwen’s streak of three straight wins ended when he fell to Chris Dobey in the semi-finals of last week’s event. Dobey had yet to make it past the quarter-finals since he won Night One of the 2023 Premier League. Alas, Dobey fell in the finals to Gerwyn Price, who picked up his second victory in the 2023 Premier League season.

This week the PDC event is in Newcastle for Night Eight of the tournament, which wraps up on May 25 at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Here are the quarter-final matchups for this week’s event, which takes place at the Utilita Arena: Michael van Gerwen vs. Peter Wright, Nathan Aspinall vs. Dimitri Van den Bergh, Gerwyn Price vs. Jonny Clayton, and Michael Smith vs. Chris Dobey.

Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen is currently the No. 3 ranked player in the world. Van Gerwen had an outstanding year in 2022, winning three-ranked televised events and one non-ranked event. He then opened 2023 with a runner-up finish to Michael Smith in the PDC World Championship.

Van Gerwen had a shaky start to the 2023 Premier League season, but he found his groove and ran off three straight wins heading into Night Seven. Van Gerwen opened last week strong with a 6-1- win over Peter Wright, but stumbled in the next round, losing to Chris Dobey 6-0. Despite his stumble, the 33-year old Van Gerwen sits in first place in the standings with 22 points. His closest competitor is the second-placed Gerwyn Price with 13 points.

Van Gerwen opens Night Eight with another quarter-finals matchup against Peter Wright, who is in eighth place with two points on the season.

Gerwyn Price

Gerwyn Price has struggled with consistency this year. The No. 4 ranked player in the world, Price opened the 2023 Premier League with a quarter-finals elimination. He then defeated Nathan Aspinall in the finals on Night Two. Entering Night Seven, Price had finished in the quarter-finals three times and as the runner-up once. Price’s struggles ended last week when he topped Chris Dobey in the finals to win his second event of the 2023 Premier League. With his victory, the 38-year-old passed Micheal Smith and moved to second place in the Premier League standings for the year.

Price opens Night Eight against seventh-place Jonny Clayton, who has seven points.

Michael Smith

The No. 1 player in the world, Michael Smith, had possibly the toughest draw of Night One when he matched up against Michael van Gerwen in the Quarter-Finals. Van Gerwen triumphed in that game, beating Smith 6-3 and then moving on to the Finals, where he fell to Chris Dobey. On Night Two, Smith got past his first-round opponent, Jonny Clayton, but he dropped his semi-final matchup against Nathan Aspinall by a score of 6-4. On Night Three, Smith dispatched Gerwyn Price in the opening round before winning the Final. Smith followed that victory by being eliminated in the semi-finals and quarter-finals in his next two weeks. On Night Six, Smith returned to the finals, only to be eliminated by Van Gerwen. Night Seven saw Smith fall in the first round to Chris Dobey 6-4.

Smith’s up-and-down run has been surprising. He followed his last quarter-final round elimination by finishing as the runner-up, so don’t expect his confidence to falter heading into Night Eight where he once again faces the sixth-place Dobey in the opening round.

With his finish in Night Seven, Smith dropped into third place on the year with 12 points. Nathan Aspinall is right behind him with 11 points.

Best Bet to Win 2023 Premier League Darts Night Eight

Things are heating up as the 2023 Premier League Darts season wears on and the standings, at least in the middle of the pack, are getting tight. Van Gerwen’s 6-0 loss to Dobey gives me pause about picking him to win Night Eight. As for Price, he has been too inconsistent this year for my taste. With that, I’m picking Smith to have a bounce-back performance on Night Eight and get the win.

Pick: Michael Smith to win 2023 Premier League Darts Night Eight.
