As the 2022 MLB All-Star break approaches, the race for the individual player awards for the 2022 Major League Baseball season are beginning to heat up. With that, it’s time to take a fresh look at the pitchers who are currently in the running for the 2022 National League Cy Young Award.
The Cy Young Award is given annually to the best pitcher in MLB. The American League and National League both award the honor. Last year, Robbie Ray of the Toronto Blue Jays claimed the AL Cy Young. Corbin Burnes of the Milwaukee Brewers took home the 2021 NL Cy Young. Burnes, who made $608,000 in 2021, signed a one-year deal for $6.5 million in 2022 to remain with the Brewers. Milwaukee is getting their money’s worth from the 27-year-old as he is once again in the hunt for the NL Cy Young Award.

2022 NL Cy Young Award picks
|To Win 2022 National League Cy Young|
In the early going of the 2022 MLB season, Sandy Alcantara seemed like a longshot — at best — to win the 2022 National League Cy Young Award. Now, as the midpoint of the season nears, the 26-year-old right-hander is the favorite to take home the NL Cy Young.
Alcantara has two seasons under his belt where he has started more than 20 games, 2019 (32) and 2021 (33). His record in those seasons was 6-14 and 9-15. His ERA in 2019 was 3.88 and in 2021 his ERA was 3.19. Alcantara is having a career year in 2022.
The Miami Marlins hurler has started 15 games and his record is 7-3. As for his ERA, it’s the second lowest in the National League at 1.95. He is also very close to the top-five in the NL in strikeouts with 94.
The one thing to watch is if Alcantara can stay consistent for the rest of the 2022 season.
Corbin Burnes entered his fifth major league season with high expectations. That should have been expected considering the 27-year-old won the 2021 NL Cy Young while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers. Burnes finished the season with the best ERA in MLB at 2.42. He was also fifth in the league in strikeouts with 234.
Burnes has picked up where he left off. The right-hander is fourth in the NL in ERA at 2.41 and first in strikeouts with 119.
Burnes has started 15 games for the Brewers and has a record of 6-4. If his projected numbers play out, Burnes should top his Cy Young winning season from last year.
Joe Musgrove made his MLB debut in 2016 with the Houston Astros. In 2018 he was moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent three years in Pittsburgh before he was dealt to his hometown San Diego Padres.
Musgrove had a career year in 2021 with the Padres. The 29-year-old started 31 games and went 11-9. He had his first year of over 200 strikeouts with 203 K’s and his ERA was a career low 3.18. Musgrove is likely to improve on those numbers in 2022.
The right-hander has started 13 games for San Diego in 2022 and he has a record of 8-1. He is second in the National League in wins, third in ERA at 2.12 and he has a respectable 82 strikeouts.
Sandy Alcantara and Joe Musgrove are having great years, but they are also performing better than they have in their careers, which means we don’t know what to expect over the course of a full year from either of them. We know Corbin Burnes has what it takes to continue putting up the numbers he has done so far this season.
Pick: Corbin Burnes to win the 2022 National League Cy Young Award.
