The Kansas City Royals have been to the World Series twice before, winning one and losing one. But their last appearance was in 1985. After sweeping the Los Angeles Angels in the ALDS, the Royals will look to right-hander James Shields to get them off to another quick start against Baltimore.
Shields had a 14-8 record in the regular season with a 3.21 ERA and is 1-0 in the postseason after two starts. In his most recent outing, he threw six innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs, while striking out six. Manager Ned Yost realizes that anything can happen in the play-offs, though, and that the bullpen will have to be strong.
“We have to look and see how it matches up,” said Yost. “You better have a good long man, in case somebody stubs their toe, or somebody is hit by a line drive. You need a guy to come in and hold it right here.”
The Baltimore Orioles, on the other hand, haven’t been to a World Series since 1983 when they beat the Philadelphia Phillies in seven games. There’s no official word about the starting pitcher for Baltimore. Right-hander Charles Tillman will likely get the game one start again. Tillman made his postseason debut against Detroit in game one of the ALDS, taking a no decision. Tillman threw five innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six as the Orioles exploded late for a 12-3 victory.
The MLB moneyline listed Baltimore -125 to win game one of the series. Kansas City is +125 to pull the upset.
