Cleveland Guardians To Make 2022 MLB Playoffs Picks

The Cleveland Guardians franchise has been in existence for 118 seasons. During that time, the team has made it to the playoffs 15 times and won the World Series twice. The team’s most recent World Series victory came in 1948. Cleveland has made it to the World Series three times since 1948, with their most recent trip to the Fall Classic coming in 2016 when they lost to the Chicago Cubs in seven games.

The Guardians hope to end their World Series drought in 2022 — no team has currently gone as long as Cleveland without winning the Series. Before the Guardians can do that, they need to make the playoffs.

The club missed the postseason in 2021 after posting a record of 80-82 and finishing 13 games behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. Today, the Guardians are in second place in the AL Central with a 40-38 record. They are 3.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins. Cleveland is currently outside the AL Wild Card race. The Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays would claim the AL Wild Card spots if the season ended today. The Guardians are two games behind the Rays for the third and final AL Wild Card spot in 2022.

Hitting

As a team, the Guardians have scored 335 runs, which puts them in seventh place in the American League. That number is less than any team currently in the running for the postseason other  than the Tampa Bay Rays, who have 325 runs scored.

Andres Gimenez is the only Cleveland player hitting .300 or better and he is right on the .300 mark. The team’s best all-around offensive player is Jose Ramirez, who leads the team in home runs (16), RBIs (63), OBP (.375), OPS (.952) and hits (82). Ramirez is second on the club in batting average at .289.

The team’s third highest batting average belongs to rookie Oscar Gonzalez. He is hitting .285, but he has not played since June 29 when he was placed on the injured list with an abdominal issue.

Pitching

The Guardians have five pitchers who have started more than 10 games this season. Of that group, Shane Bieber has the lowest ERA at 3.16. That puts him in the No. 12 spot in the American League. After Bieber, Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill and Zach Plesac rank 20-22 in the AL. That’s not bad for the core group, but the team lacks a standout starter and that could hurt them.

Bieber leads the team with 93 strikeouts.

One very bright spot for the Guardians is reliever Emmanuel Chase, who leads the American League in saves with 19.

Our pick

The Guardians need to improve their pitching, hitting or both those items. With a run differential of -3, Cleveland is far from the Red Sox (+63), Blue Jays (+20) or Rays (+15) in that important statistic. Off their four most recent wins, only one came by more than one run and that was a 2-0 shutout of the New York Yankees.

The Guardians’ most recent series were against the Twins, Red Sox and Yankees (all likely playoff teams). Cleveland went 6-8 during that stretch.

I don’t think the Guardians will end their World Series drought or make the playoffs in 2022.

Pick: Cleveland Guardians to miss the 2022 MLB playoffs.
