Seattle Mariners To Make 2022 MLB Playoff Picks

The Seattle Mariners have the longest playoff drought not just in Major League Baseball, but in all four major sports. No team in MLB, the NHL, the NBA or the NFL has failed to make the postseason in more consecutive seasons than the Mariners who last appeared in the MLB playoffs in 2001. That year, the Seattle club made it to the AL Championship Series after posting a 116-46 record. The only other team to win more than 100 games that season was the Oakland Athletics, who finished second to Seattle in the AL West standings. Seattle’s 116 wins tied the major league record for victories in a single season. The Yankees, who lost the 2001 World Series to the Arizona Diamondbacks, bested the Mariners four games to one in the ALCS in 2021.

The Mariners look to end their 20-year drought during the 2022 season. As of this writing, the Mariners are in second place in the AL West with a record of 65-54. The team trails the Houston Astros, who are first in the American League with a 76-43 record, by 11 games. The Mariners are the leading team in the AL Wild Card race, but the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox are all hot on the trail of Seattle, who holds a two-game or fewer lead on those AL clubs.

Hitting

Seattle is not hitting all that well as a team. The club ranks 25th in the league in batting average at .232 and its best hitter is Ty France, who has an average of .287. Despite the club’s poor overall batting average, the Mariners have been able to make substantial contact with the ball. The club ranks 12th in the league with 133 home runs and is 20th in the league in runs with 492. The Mariners have a positive run differential on the season at +28.

Pitching

The Mariners don’t have a single pitcher in the top 12 in American League ERA. However, the team has an overall ERA of 3.69, which is good enough for fourth overall in the American League. The teams with better pitching are the Astros, Yankees and Rays.

Seattle has four pitchers ranked between No. 13 and No. 20 in ERA in the American League, with Logan Gilbert (3.51) leading the pack and Marco Gonzales (4.18) at No. 20. The Mariners’ pitching staff hasn’t been overwhelming, but it has been consistent and they have given the offense a chance to win more often than not.

Robbie Ray, who has a 3.87 ERA, is the No. three player in the AL in strikeouts with 166.

Fielding

The Mariners are the No. 2 team in MLB and No. 1 in the AL in fielding. Seattle has a fielding percentage of .989 and the club’s 42 overall errors are the fewest in the league.

Our Pick

With consistent pitching, top-notch defense and the ability to hit home runs, the Mariners are a team that might make its fans nervous because of the number of close games they have, but the team is winning more than losing and has not lost more than three games in a row since a four-game skid in May.

If the Mariners can keep playing like they have been since they ended that stretch of four straight losses to Boston on May 22, Seattle should make it into the playoffs and end their long drought.
