2022 MLB National League MVP Picks – Paul Goldschmidt Emerges

The 2022 MLB All-Star break is fast approaching and with that, it’s a good time to get a feel for the field of players who will be in the running for the National League’s Most Valuable Player and the front-runner might surprise you.

At the end of the 2021 MLB seasonBryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies became part of a select group of MLB players when he became the 12th multiple winner of the National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award. Harper is the eighth player from the Phillies to claim the award.

Since 1931, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America has voted for the MVP in the National and American League. Voters complete and submit their ballots before the postseason begins.

Harper joins Barry Bonds (7x), Mike Schmidt, Stan Musial, Roy Campanella, Albert Pujols (3x), Carl Hubbell, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Dale Murphy (2x) as a multiple-time NL MVP winner.

As for the Phillies, Harper joins Schmidt, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Jim Konstanty and Chuck Klein as NL MVP winners from that club.

Harper finished with 17 first place votes and 348 points in the MVP votingJuan Soto of the Washington Nationals, who earned 274 points, followed him as the NL MVP runner-up. Harper and Soto are unlikely to be in the running for the 2022 NL MVP.

Paul Goldschmidt

Paul Goldschmidt joined the league in 2011. The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted the Texan in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB draft. Goldschmidt spent eight seasons with Arizona before they traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals during the 2019 season. In 2013, Goldschmidt led the National League in home runs and RBI‘s. He finished second in MVP voting that year. He was also the runner-up in 2015. Since then Goldschmidt has finished no higher than third in MVP voting. Last year he was sixth.

The 34-year-old is the favorite to take home the NL MVP in 2022. He leads the NL in batting average (.335), hits (107) and WAR (4.7). He is tied for first in OBP (.420) and tied for second in total bases (192). Goldschmidt ranks second in OPS (1.021)  and the seven-time All-Star is third in the NL in RBIs with 65.

Manny Machado

Manny Machado was the early season favorite to take home the National League MVP thanks to his fast start to the season. Machado has cooled off as the San Diego Padres head to the midpoint of the season, but not by all that much.

The 30-year-old is fourth in the NL with a .310 batting average. He leads San Diego in home runs (15), RBIs (51), hits (90), OBP (.385), slugging (.538), OPS (.923) and WAR (4.3).

Machado is a big reason why the Padres are in second place in the NL West.

Peter Alonso

Like Paul Goldschmidt, Pete Alonso has picked up his game as the season has progressed. The 27-year-old first baseman for the New York Mets has been a potent hitter this year. He leads the National League in RBIs with 72 and he is third in the NL in home runs with 23. Alonso is hitting .272 on the season. Alonso’s beast season in the majors came in his rookie campaign in 2019 when he hit 53 home runs and had 120 RBI’s with a batting average of .260. He won the NL Rookie of the Year that season and finished in seventh in MVP voting. Alonso might not put up the same numbers he did in 2019, but he will be close if he continues to connect at the same pace for the rest of the season.

Our pick

The MLB season is a long one and a lot can change in the final 73 games of the season, but Paul Goldschmidt looks like he is locked in and he should be the winner of the NL MVP in 2022.

Pick: Paul Goldschmidt to win the 2022 National League MVP Award.
