When the 2021 Major League Baseball season came to an end, Jonathan India of the Cincinnati Reds was a near-unanimous pick for the National League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award. India was one vote away from a sweep for the award. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America, which votes on the award, had India with 29 first-place votes. The runner-up for the award, Trevor Rogers of the Miami Marlins, had one first-place vote and 26 second-place votes. Dylan Carlson of the St. Louis Cardinals was the only other player to earn second-place votes, with three.
India was the eighth player from the Reds to win the award. He joined Scott Williamson (1999), Chris Sabo (1988), Pat Zachry (1976), Johnny Bench (1968), Tommy Helms (1966), Pete Rose (1963), and Frank Robinson (1956).

MacKenzie Gore made the San Diego Padres after a solid showing in spring training in 2022. The 23-year-old left-hander has looked good in the regular season so far. Gore has started seven games for the Padres. His record is 3-1 to go along with an ERA of 1.71, which leads the San Diego starting rotation. Gore has pitched 42 innings for the Padres this year and he has 47 strikeouts to go with 14 walks.
Nolan Gorman was not on the starting roster of the St. Louis Cardinals to open the 2022 season. However, the 22-year-old got the call from the team in mid-May. Since joining the club, the infielder has been impressed in the nine games he has played.
Gorman has a .321 batting average with an OPS of .942..He has one home run and five RBIs to go with 10 strikeouts.
Gorman was the 19th overall pick in the 2018 amateur draft and was hitting .308 with 15 home runs and 23 RBIs for Triple-A Memphis before getting the call from the Cardinals.
The Arizona Diamondbacks called up Alek Thomas in early May. Thomas, one of the brightest prospects in baseball, was hitting .277 with four home runs and 14 RBIs for Reno before he got the call to the bigs.
The 22-year-old is doing well in the majors. Thomas is hitting .273 with three home runs, six RBIs an OPS of .809, and 13 strikeouts since he joined the Diamondbacks on May 8.
Oneil Cruz was one of the preseason favorites to win the 2022 NL Rookie of the Year. However, the shortstop did not make the Pittsburgh Pirates roster out of spring training and he remains with Triple-A Indianapolis.
Cruz is hitting .220 on the season, but in his past 10 games, his batting average is .325. Some bad news befell Cruz on May 29 when he injured his ankle sliding into a base and he was pulled from that game.
Many believe it’s just a matter of time before he gets called up by the Pirates, which will keep his name in the mix for NL Rookie of the Year in 2022.
Right now, MacKenizie Gore looks like he is going to win the NL Rookie of the Year. The only concern for the young pitcher is if he has what it takes to go deep in the games he starts. He has looked impressive on the mound early in the season and if he can handle the rigors of a complete MLB season, Gore looks like the pick.
Pick: MacKenzie Gore to win the 2022 National League Rookie of the Year Award.
