The 2022 MLB Draft is fast approaching. Last year, MLB pushed the entry draft back to the All-Star break in order to get better coverage for the event. Before that change, the draft took place during the first week of June. The 2022 MLB entry draft begins on Sunday, July 17 and the event lasts three days. There are 20 rounds in the draft. The Baltimore Orioles get the first pick. The Orioles selected firth last season.

The 2022 MLB Draft takes place in the following order: 1. Baltimore Orioles  2. Arizona Diamondbacks  3. Texas Rangers 4. Pittsburgh Pirates  5. Washington Nationals  6. Miami Marlins 7. Druw Jones

The son of five-time MLB All-Star Andruw Jones, 18-year-old Druw Jones reminds MLB scouts of his father. An outfielder, Druw, does not have the same build as his dad — he is taller and leaner at 6-foot-4 and 180 pounds — but the young man’s upside seems to be close to his father’s. Jones is the best defensive player among high school players this year and although his hitting is a work in progress, he shows promise at the plate.

Jones has a strong arm and his top-notch defense makes him a potential shortstop as well.

Termarr Johnson

The expectations are incredibly high for 18-year-old Termarr Johnson. The 5’10” high school shortstop might be the best pure hitter in the 2022 MLB Draft class. One MLB scout compared his discipline at the plate with that of Wade Boggs and his connection skills with Vladimir Guerrero Sr. If Johnson can have a career half as successful as either of those players, he’ll be a longtime contributor at the major league level.

Expectation are that Johnson will play at second base in the pros because he lacks the speed and arm to play short at the MLB level.

Jackson Holliday

Jackson Holliday is another potential top draft pick with a former professional athlete as a father. In Holliday’s case, that player is seven-time MLB All-Star Matt Holliday. The younger Holliday is a great hitter, however, he struggled at points by trying to hit every pitch out of the part. The 6-foot-1, 175 pound player has committed to play college ball at Oklahoma State for his uncle Josh, who serves as the head coach for that team. Matt also helps coach the team as a volunteer.

Besides power at the plate, the left-handed hitting Holliday has good speed and his throwing arm is developing. He is playing shortstop in high school and his defensive speed and baseball smarts could help him stick at that spot in the big leagues.

Our pick

With the 2022 MLB draft fast approaching, the Baltimore Orioles still do not seem to know who they are going to select with the first overall pick. According to GM Mike Elias, the team has a list of five players it’s going to keep working on until draft day.

One thing to consider with Baltimore is the team has gone with outfielders in the past two drafts, picking Heston Kjerstad with the No. 2 selection overall in 2020 and Colton Cowser with the fifth overall pick in 2021, so they might not want to add an outfielder in the mix this season.

With that, I think Baltimore looks to the infield in 2022 and I think the team will go with Jackson Holliday over Termarr Johnson because he is a more complete — and bigger — player.

Pick: Jackson Holliday to go first overall in the 2022 MLB draft.
