Los Angeles Angels (+108) at New York Yankees (-118, 8 o/u)
After sweeping the Mariners in Seattle, the New York Yankees (29-25, 12-10 Home) head home to face Jered Weaver and the Los Angeles Angels (28-26, 12-13 Away). Tonight, Weaver (4-4, 4.08 ERA) – the ostensible ace of the L.A. rotation – will look to continue trending upward as he faces off against Nathan Eovaldi (4-1, 4.40 ERA) at Yankee Stadium (7:05 PM Eastern).
The Yankees took three in a row from the M’s, including a 3-1 win last night that saw Masahiro Tanaka scatter three hits over seven innings in his return from the disabled list. Tanaka was backed by homers from Garrett Jones and Mark Teixeira as New York improved to 7-3 in its last ten and kept its slim, half-game lead over the Rays at the top of the AL East.
The return of Tanaka will be a boon to a Yankees team that is already hitting extremely well (currently sitting 5th in the majors in runs and 6th in slugging).
Despite his 4-1 record, Eovaldi season to date leaves a little to be desired. His ERA climbed to well over four in his last start when he lasted just 4.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and three runs against Oakland.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, has dropped two straight heading into tonight (both to Tampa Bay). The team had put together a nice five-game winning streak prior to that and looked to be closing in on the surprising Astros at the top of the AL West. But the recent mini-skid has kept them 5.5 games off the division lead.
The Angels will be looking for star center fielder Mike Trout to bust out of a 4/18 slump (seven strikeouts) in the last five games. The team will also be hoping that Weaver can continue his recent hot-streak. The lefty, who started the year 0-4, hasn’t lost in his last five starts, posting four wins and one no-decision over that span.
As far as a betting pick for tonight’s game, Weaver has certainly improved as the year has progressed, but the Yankees lineup is playing its best baseball of the year, top to bottom. The Yanks have also won four of the last five against the Angels.
Pick: Yankees (-118).
