The biggest NBA betting storylines

The Clippers got hammered. The league fined them $30 million and stripped five first-round picks. Owner Steve Ballmer drew a year-long suspension. Kawhi avoided a suspension, and his trade to Toronto finally closed.

• Wemby wants redemption. Year four starts with a Finals loss still fresh. He’s the MVP favorite and the Spurs lead the title board. The opener against OKC is a statement spot.
• The champs run it back. The Knicks return their entire starting five. Brunson, Towns, Anunoby, Hart, and Bridges all come back. The banner goes up October 20.

The Kawhi Leonard ruling: What the NBA Decided

The NBA announced its findings on September 2. It ruled the Clippers violated salary cap circumvention rules. The case centered on Kawhi’s endorsement deal with Aspiration, a now-bankrupt company. The league called it a pattern of misconduct from a prior offender.

The penalties were stiff. The Clippers paid a $30 million fine and forfeited five first-round picks. Ballmer, Lawrence Frank, and Gillian Zucker are all serving suspensions. Kawhi was fined $700,000 but was not suspended. His contract was not voided.

The Clippers first rejected the findings. Ballmer reversed course on September 13 and accepted the punishment. One day later, the Raptors trade went through; Toronto sent Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two firsts, a pick swap, and two seconds to LA.

For bettors, the fallout is simple. Toronto’s futures just lost their biggest asterisk. The Clippers are rebuilding and sit at +50000 at BetOnline. At media day, Kawhi declined to discuss the investigation and said he’s focused on being a Raptor.

Training Camp Report

76ers: Embiid dropped weight and practiced fully on day one. LeBron and Jaylen Brown completed their first official practice with the team. Philly also added Anfernee Simons on a two-year, $12.3 million deal. The depth looks better than last year.

Warriors: Stephen Curry signed a two-year, $116 million extension. He says his knee has no limitations heading into camp. That keeps Golden State in the playoff mix at +5000 to +6600.

Pistons: Jalen Duren skipped media day amid a contract dispute. Watch that situation before betting Detroit. The Pistons open the season hosting Boston at 3 p.m. ET on October 20.

Spurs: Wemby enters year four with a clear message. He wants redemption after the Finals. San Antonio’s young core of Castle, Harper, and Fox is intact.

2027 NBA championship odds

The title board barely moved in September. The Spurs and Thunder still sit at the top. The 76ers and Knicks form the second tier. Here’s the market across three books.

Line shopping edge: BetOnline has the best price on almost every contender. The Knicks pay +1000 there versus +850 at BetUS. The Cavs pay +3300 there versus +2200 at Bovada. That gap adds up on a futures ticket.

The Biggest Futures Movers

Raptors. Toronto finally has Kawhi on the roster. Bovada has them at +2000, the shortest price on the board. BetUS and BetOnline still hold at +2800. That split is worth shopping.

Knicks (shortening at BetUS). The champs are +850 at BetUS, tied with Philly. That’s shorter than the +1000 they held a month ago. Returning the full starting five matters.

Wembanyama remains the MVP favorite heading into the season. SGA chases a third straight award. Doncic leads the Lakers without LeBron for the first time.

Wemby at +200 is a fair price with a health caveat. SGA is the durable volume play at +350 to +375. Doncic gets a bigger usage share without LeBron. Giannis ranges from +900 to +1200 heading into his first Heat season.

Line shopping edge: all three books agree on Wemby, then split. Doncic pays +600 at BetUS and Bovada versus +450 at BetOnline. Tatum pays +2500 at BetOnline versus +1500 at BetUS. Giannis pays best at Bovada. Always compare before betting a non-favorite.

2027 Rookie of the Year odds

The rookie class is loaded at the top. The race looks wide open. Opportunity and usage will decide it more than raw talent.

The books can’t agree on a favorite. BetOnline has Wilson. Bovada has Boozer. BetUS has them tied. That kind of split is where line shopping pays off.

Wilson: the riser. The No. 4 pick at +225 at BetOnline but +325 at Bovada. Chicago should hand him plenty of minutes. If you like him, Bovada’s price is the one to grab.

Dybantsa: the usage question. The No. 1 pick is NBA-ready. But Washington has Trae Young and Anthony Davis. His shots may be harder to come by early.

Opening Night Odds and Week One Schedule

The first lines of the season are posted. Every home team is favored on opening night. Here’s the BetUS board for the October 20 tripleheader.

Knicks -5 on banner night: the biggest spread of the night. The champs return all five starters. The Sixers are playing with three new pieces in a hostile building. Emotional ring nights can cut both ways, though.

Highest total on the board: 76ers-Knicks at 231.5. Books expect plenty of offense from two loaded rosters. The Knicks’ team total of 118.5 is the highest on the board, too.

• Oct. 22: The Sixers’ home opener against the Cavs. OKC hosts Jokic and the Nuggets.

The favorites: fair but thin. The Spurs and Thunder around +260 to +300 are priced near their ceiling. Take BetOnline’s +280 and +300 if you’re backing either one.
