Ten days into the season, and the title favorite is already limping. Oklahoma City lost Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, and Chet Holmgren in the span of one week. The books reacted fast. San Antonio now sits alone atop most title boards.

The injury wave didn’t stop in OKC. Anthony Edwards needs knee surgery. Kawhi Leonard is out for weeks. Tyrese Haliburton, Paolo Banchero, and Jaren Jackson Jr. are all sidelined too.

Meanwhile the standings look nothing like the futures board. Memphis started 5-0. Detroit and Philly lead the East at 5-1. The champion Knicks are 2-4. This update recaps the first ten days and previews the next two weeks, including two NBA Cup nights.

The biggest NBA betting storylines before tip-off

OKC’s week from hell is the story. William fractured his left fibula and dislocated his ankle against the Clippers on October 25. He had surgery and will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season. Wallace had shoulder surgery for a torn labrum on Friday. Then Holmgren suffered a small patellar tendon tear. He’s out eight to 10 weeks.

That’s three starters gone. The Thunder are still 4-2, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is still SGA. But the depth that made them co-favorites is gone for now.

Other storylines moving the board:

• The Sixers are rolling. Philly is 5-1 and has beaten the Knicks twice. Friday’s 98-93 win was the NBA Cup opener for both teams. The LeBron, Brown, and Embiid experiment is working early.
• The champs are stumbling. The Knicks are 2-4 and sit 11th in the East. Mike Brown says his team needs to ‘hit singles.’ Meanwhile, Towns tweaked his wrist against Chicago but was listed as probable Friday.
• Wemby’s rough start. Wembanyama shot 1-for-13 on opening night. He admitted afterward that he ‘might be overthinking it.’ The Spurs are 4-2 and still on top of most title boards.
• Memphis is the surprise. The Grizzlies are the league’s last unbeaten team at 5-0. Rookie Cameron Boozer posted a triple-double on Thursday. He’s the second-youngest player ever to do it.

Opening night recap: how our leans did

We went 1-1 with one pass on opening night. Here’s the honest scorecard.

Celtics at Pistons:

Boston led by 22 and still lost. Detroit stormed back behind Duncan Robinson, who scored 15 of his 21 in the fourth quarter. Paul George’s 38 points went to waste. Our Celtics ticket burned.

76ers at Knicks:

Philly didn’t need the points. Maxey scored 28, and the Sixers won outright as +146 underdogs. Banner nights really can be a trap.

Thunder at Spurs:

SGA dropped 32, and OKC won by 12 as a 2.5-point dog. Holmgren played but went down after a collision with De’Aaron Fox. In hindsight, the Thunder were the right side. We’ll take the pass.

NBA injury report: who’s out and for how long

It’s been a brutal start. Here are the injuries that matter most for bettors over the next two weeks.

Timberwolves: Edwards was off to a monster start. He scored 133 points in his first four games, a franchise record. That included 47 in an overtime loss at Cleveland. Minnesota has the league’s best point differential, but this is a huge blow for the next two months.

Raptors: Kawhi played just two games before his left knee swelled up. An MRI showed no structural damage. Still, this is the risk everyone priced in when Toronto made the trade.

Pistons: Detroit is 5-1 even with Duren out. He strained his hamstring around October 25 and should return in the next week or two. That makes the Pistons a team to watch in the standings.

Early standings: who’s hot and who’s not

It’s a small sample. Most teams have played five or six games. Still, a few starts are worth noting.

Detroit at +2800 at BetOnline and Bovada is interesting given that start. Boston has won four straight after the opening loss. Memphis is the feel-good story, and BetOnline still has the Grizzlies at +30000. Six games won’t move us there.

2027 NBA Championship odds

The title market is mostly calm heading into opening night. The Spurs and Thunder are co-favorites, with the 76ers and Knicks right behind. Bovada hasn’t moved a single contender since earlier this month.

The big mover: Toronto. The Raptors shortened from +2800 to +1600 at BetOnline with Kawhi now on the floor. BetOnline also let the Spurs drift from +280 to +315. BetUS trimmed the Celtics from +1600 to +1500.

The other big movers: Boston shortened from +1500 to +1100 at BetUS after four straight wins. Philly dropped from +900 to +700 at BetOnline. The Knicks drifted from +850 to +1000 at BetUS. Houston jumped into the top six at +1200 to +1500.

The strange one: Minnesota got shorter. The Wolves went from +2500 to +1600 at BetUS, even with Edwards out for up to two months. The market loves their point differential. We’d stay away until Ant is back.

Our take: Shop the Thunder hard. The gap between +375 at Bovada and +525 at BetOnline is huge. If you still believe in SGA, BetOnline is the only place to bet on them. Philly at +700 is the team we like most right now. The Sixers are winning, and the stars are healthy. Boston at +1300 at Bovada is also worth a look.

2027 NBA MVP odds

The books haven’t reposted or updated their MVP boards since the season started. These are the last prices from when the season started a few weeks ago. Two things should move them soon. Edwards is out for up to two months, which likely ends his MVP case. And SGA now has to carry an even bigger load in OKC.

Our take: SGA at +400 is the play while these prices are stale. He scored 32 on opening night and OKC needs everything from him. Stay off Edwards for now. If Wemby keeps struggling, his +200 should drift too.

2027 Rookie of the Year odds

Cameron Boozer is making his case early. He’s averaging 15.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 6.2 assists for the unbeaten Grizzlies. He leads all rookies with three double-doubles. These are the last posted prices from October 17. Boozer is +275 at BetUS and +300 at BetOnline. Expect both to be shorter once the boards update.

Our take: Grab Boozer at +300 at BetOnline before the boards update. He’s the best rookie on the league’s best team so far. That number shouldn’t last.

Betting trends we’re watching

Fade the injury overreaction. Books move fast on big injuries. Sometimes they move too far. The Thunder still have the reigning MVP. Their regular-season win total and game lines may now undervalue them.

Back the healthy teams. Philly, Detroit, and Boston are winning with most of their key pieces available. Health is the best predictor in November. Lean toward the teams that have it.

Watch the Knicks price. A 2-4 start always creates buy-low talk. New York’s turnovers and static offense are real problems, though. We’d want to see a turnaround before buying.

What to watch over the next two weeks

NBA Cup Night, November 6. Philadelphia visits Cleveland, then Portland visits the Lakers. Both air on Prime Video. Cup group games count in the standings.

NBA Cup Night, November 13. The Knicks visit Indiana, then Golden State visits San Antonio. New York already lost its Cup opener, so it badly needs this one.

Injury returns. Duren and Flagg should be back soon. Kawhi’s re-evaluation is the bigger one. A good update could move Toronto’s futures.

The Thunder’s response. OKC passed on signing Ochai Agbaji, so a trade is possible. Kristaps Porzingis has been mentioned in trade rumors. Watch for depth moves across the league.

Team option deadline. Teams must decide on 2027-28 rookie-scale options by November 2.
