Kansas Jayhawks favored for another conference win in the Big 12

The new college basketball season may still be a few weeks away. But with plenty of trading having already taken place, we thought now might be a good time to check in on the latest NCAAB futures market for the Big 12 and see how the betting is going. The favorites are the Kansas Jayhawks at +180. But are they a good value bet to repeat their win of 2022? Let’s take a closer look and also name some NCAAB betting picks.

  • The 2023/24 college basketball season gets underway on November 6th, 2023, and finishes on March 17th, 2024
  • In the Big 12, the Kansas Jayhawks are looking to win the conference outright for the second year in succession
  • As well as winning the Big 12 outright in 2023, they also shared the title with Baylor in 2022

If we include the 2021/22 season, the Jayhawks are looking to win the Big 12 for a third successive year. But for wins on their own, it will be just the two wins if they manage it again this season.

But before we get onto the betting to win the Big 12, let’s first take a look at the futures betting to win the 2023/24 NCAA Championship.

2023/24 NCAA Basketball Futures Betting

The Uconn Huskies won the NCAA Championship, defeating San Diego State 75-59 in the final on April 3rd. This was the fifth time Uconn has won the Championship. But despite this, they don’t start the season as the favorite with the best NCAAB betting sites.

Instead, the Kansas Jayhawks have been installed as the favorites to win the 2024 Championship with the best college basketball betting sites. The Jayhawks are +1000 to win the competition for a fifth time.

After the Jayhawks, is the Purdue Boilermakers at +1100. The Boilermakers have at times been joint favorites with the Jayhawks in this market. And another thing to note about them is that when this market first went live in late May, Purdue was a massive +2500 to win the 2024 Championship.

After the leading two sides come the Duke Blue Devils at +1400, with the defending champions, Uconn, next at +1600.

At this stage of the off-season, there is still plenty that could change. And with the competitive matches not starting until November, treat this market with plenty of caution.

But at the same time, going early with our bets can result in some good value bets being made. Purdue is the obvious example, with Matt Painter’s team seeing their college basketball odds slashed from +2500 to +1000 over the past few weeks.

Big 12 Regular Season betting

With a few weeks to go until the season begins again, not all the sportsbooks have live markets to win the conferences. But luckily some have, and one conference attracting a lot of interest is the Big 12.

And with Kansas being a regular winner of this conference, and also the defending champions from the 2022/23 regular season, it will come as no surprise to see they are also the favorites to win the Big 12 in the 2023/24 season.

The Jayhawks have won (or shared) the Big 12 Conference on 20 occasions in the last 25 seasons. That record includes a run from 2004/05 to 2017/18. During that run, they shared the title on four occasions.

This season the Jayhawks are the favorites at +180. That seems quite good odds given their record in recent years. The Jayhawks’ closest rivals in the betting to win the Big 12 is Houston at +400, and Texas at +450. Also in the mix are Baylor (+650) and TCU (+850).

After the leading five teams, there is a nice gap in the betting before we get to Kansas State and Iowa State, who are both +1400. West Virginia is +1600, with Texas Tech at +2000.

Kansas State and Texas Tech shared the regular season conference in the 2018/19 campaign. But have had no success since. To try and end that barron run, Kansas State appointed Jerome Tang as their head coach in 2022.

Jerome Tang is now entering his second season as head coach of Kansas State. In his first, he led them to third in the conference with an 11-7 record. Which wasn’t a bad return, and saw them finish just two wins behind the Jayhawks.

Our NCAAB Picks to win the Big 12 in the 2023/24 regular season

The Jayhawks may also improve this season, and we would by no means put you off betting on them. But we fully expect that Kansas State will have a better season under the leadership of Tang, and we are happy to wager on them too.

So for our early betting pick to win the Big 12 Conference, we’re hedging our bets. A bet on the Kansas Jayhawks at +180, and a bet on Kansas State at +1400 will see you profit if either side tops the table.

Okay, it will be a small profit on the Jayhawks, but it was only ever going to be anyway. So if the Jayhawks win, your bet on Kansas State is still covered. But if Kansas State can win the conference, we are looking at a nice healthy profit.
