Max Verstappen has stamped his authority on the 2023 Drivers Championship over the past few weeks. After briefly coming under pressure from Sergio Perez in the opening few weeks of the season, the two-time world champion has since put his teammate back in his box and shown the Mexican who is the boss.
Wins in Miami, Monaco, and Barcelona have seen Max Verstappen open up a lead at the top of the driver’s points table. Verstappen is now on 170 points, that’s 53 clear of second-place Sergio Perez on 117 points, and 71 points clear of Fernando Alonso who sits third on 99 points.

Betting to win the 2023 Driver’s World Championship
So, what has this done to the betting to win the 2023 World Championship? Well, Max Verstappen is now unbackable at -5000 to win the 2023 title and claim his third successive world crown.
The best Formula 1 betting sites are now saying, don’t bet on him. Following Verstappen in the betting is Sergio Perez at +3300, and Lewis Hamilton at +6600.
Note the name Lewis Hamilton there. All of a sudden he’s up to third in the betting, having been behind Fernando Alonso since the opening race of the season. And it gets better for Hamilton, at least in the eyes of the bookmakers, it does.
Betting to win the championship without Verstappen
In the betting to win the driver’s championship without Verstappen, Sergio Perez has long been the favorite. But Perez has been on the slide for weeks now. Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Perez was -1000, and then after poor performances in both Miami and Monaco, he slipped to -700, and -500, respectively.
Now after another poor showing in Barcelona, coupled with a strong performance by Mercedes, and Hamiton in particular, Perez is just -350 to win in this market.
But the big mover in the market is behind Perez. Yes, it’s that man we mentioned earlier, Lewis Hamilton. Following a much-improved performance at the Spanish Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has seen his odds slashed from +1200 third-favorite to +300 second-favorite. Fernando Alonso is traveling in the opposite direction. He is now third-favorite at +850.
This is all based on the upgrades made to the Mercedes car. The upgrades were originally given short shrift. But after the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished second and third respectively, in Barcelona, the improvements are being taken more seriously.
Betting to win the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix
Yes, Max Verstappen is the betting favorite. He’s just -300 to win his fourth successive race this weekend. And to give his short odds more justification, he is also the defending champion, having won this race in 2022.
Twelve months ago, the Dutchman won from the pole position. Runner up on the day was Carlos Sainz, who also bagged the fastest lap. Lewis Hamilton completed the podium lineup.
As has been the case in the betting all season, Verstappen is followed by his teammate Sergio Perez. Perez is +700 to win in Canada, having been at +300 to win in recent races. These odds seem to be factoring in his poor form of late.
Following the Red Bull duo is Lewis Hamilton at +1200, with Fernando Alonso next at +1600. It’s hard to see the winner coming from outside of that group. But if you wish to know, George Russell is next at +2000, with Charles Leclerc at +3300, and Carlos Sainz at +5000.

As mentioned in this picks article, Lewis Hamilton has jumped ahead of Fernando Alonso in the F1 betting markets. But for some reason, he hasn’t in the betting to finish in the top 3 in Canada.
