The 2023 Formula 1 season started with a surprising podium finish for Fernando Alonso and the Aston Martin team at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Furthermore, teammate Lance Stroll was able to finish top-6, despite sustaining injuries while cycling in Malaga the previous weekend. Those injuries were later revealed to include fractures in both wrists as well as a broken toe.

Despite being second in the Constructors World Championship, Aston Martin only has the fourth-best odds to win the title. The Constructors World Championship is awarded to the most successful constructor at the end of each Formula 1 season based on the points earned in each race by any driver competing for that constructor.

Red Bull
In 2022, Red Bull had a remarkable season, with Max Verstappen winning the World Drivers Championship and earning 454 points in addition to the team winning the Constructors Championship. Sergio Perez will also continue driving for the team in 2023 after amassing 3105 points in 2022, which included two wins. Red Bull won 17 of 22 races last season, with Max Verstappen claiming 15 of the 17 victories outright. Red Bull secured the championship with 759 points, Ferrari with 554 points, and Mercedes with 515 points.
Following the first constructors’ championship for Christian Horner’s team since 2013, there seems to be uncertainty as to whether anyone can overtake Verstappen and the Red Bull team. While it’s understandable that Red Bull is favored to win a second consecutive Constructors’ Championship, especially with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez taking the top two spots at the Bahrain Grand Prix this past weekend.
As you can see on the odds table listed, they are the overwhelming favorites at -500. There’s not much value in wagering on them with those odds, so let’s take a look at a couple of other options with some more favorable odds. Moreover, our “How to” guide for Formula 1 betting provides a plethora of tips to help you make informed decisions.
Ferrari
Last season, Ferrari came in second place to Red Bull, marking the first time it has come close to winning the championship since finishing as runner-up to Mercedes in 2019. The team accumulated 554 points in 2022.
Reviewing last season’s results would seem to indicate that Ferrari had a successful season, with Charles Leclerc, having his best year in 2022, finishing second in points with 208 and winning three races. Carlos Sainz returns as Leclerc’s teammate after he finished fifth with 246 points and one race win. However, the last time Ferrari won a Constructors Championship was 15 years ago in 2008. Ferrari’s mismanagement of several races last season led to the resignation of team principal Mattia Binotto.
This season Ferrari has appointed former Alfa Romeo boss, Fred Vasseur as Team Principal, and if the results of the Bahrain Grand Prix are any indication, Ferrari is in for a long season. With all the changes happening with the Ferrari team and their lead driver starting the season with a DNF, I don’t understand why they have the second-best odds at +650 but I don’t like betting on them to suddenly turn it around.
Mercedes
Mercedes’s third-place finish in 2022 was disappointing as it signaled the end of their dominant run the past decade. From 2014 to 2021, the team achieved the impressive feat of winning eight consecutive Constructors Championships. Lewis Hamilton claimed six Drivers Championships during this period, while Nico Rosberg emerged victorious in 2016.
However, the renowned racer Lewis Hamilton failed to secure a win for Mercedes and ended up finishing in the No. 6 position in the driver standings with 240 points, which marked his lowest ranking to date. Even with the addition of promising young driver George Russell, who joined Mercedes for the first time in 2022, Mercedes doesn’t seem like a viable contender for the championship as long as they have concerns about the design of the car and are questioning how successful they can be with it.
This is no slight to Russell who had a successful year, winning the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix and finishing in fourth place in the driver’s standings with 275 points. After seeing the internal turmoil regarding the car design, I’m passing on Mercedes at +800 to overtake Red Bull and return to the championship glory of years past.
Aston Martin
Fresh off Fernando Alonso’s first podium finish since Qatar in November 2021, Alonso is excited about the upcoming season. He feels comfortable in the car and more importantly feels comfortable with the team. The former two-time world champion stated he hasn’t felt this positive about a season in a decade!
The success the team had in qualifying translated over to strong performances in Bahrain. Lance Stroll overcoming injury to contribute as well, has me feeling bullish about Aston Martin championship prospects.
Aston Martin is leading the Constructor Championship yet has the fourth-best odds to win the championship. The opportunity to take advantage of these odds is now because the odds are only going to get less favorable as the season continues.
Best Bet
This Aston Martin team feels like it is in for a memorable season. They have all the makings of a championship team and are my pick at +1400 to give Red Bull a run for the Constructors Championship.
