After seven races, it’s safe to say the 2021 MotoGP season has been “eventful” — is that the right word? Yeah, eventful works! For bettors of motor sports, eventful isn’t necessarily a good thing. Before we dole out our expert (and free) betting advice, let’s catch up where things currently stand. Of course, any discussion about modern-day MotoGP has to start with Marc Marquez. Winner of six World Championships, he’s struggled coming off a devasting injury that cut his 2020 campaign short.
Marquez has raced five times this year and each time, it’s become painfully obvious that he’s not 100 percent. In each of the last three races, Marquez failed to finish the race (DNF).
However, with the German GP, he returns to a Sachsenring course that he’s absolutely dominated at over the past decade. Marquez has won each race he’s competed at here since 2010 (the 2020 event was canceled due to the pandemic). His first win was in the 125cc category, followed by two more in Moto2, then seven straight victories in MotoGP. Even by his lofty standards, that Sachsenring streak is impressive.
Given his sheer dominance at the German GP, we wouldn’t scold you for laying a wager on Marquez again this time around. However, we will not be doing the same. As we said, he’s just not the same in 2021 and it’s going to take more time to return to tip-top shape. If you are riding Marquez betting-wise, we advise you to make it a small bet. Think of it as a low-risk, high-reward wager.
MotoGP 2021 German Grand Prix Betting Picks
So if not Marquez, then who’s the betting choice to make in 2021? Well, we have three drivers in mind to “spread the wealth” on. Here they are:
Fabio Quartararo
In Marquez’s absence, no driver has seized the spotlight quite like the 23-year-old Quartararo. He has the most outright wins (3) and podium finishes (4) of any driver in MotoGP. Driving for Yamaha, he’s tops in the standings currently — 14 points ahead of runner-up Johann Zarco.
Last time out at Catalan, Quartararo finished sixth overall. However, he would’ve finished much higher if not being docked on two separate occasions, costing him six seconds off his total time. His loss was the aforementioned Zarco’s gain, who finished second and inched closer to Quartararo in the season-long point standings. Speaking of Zarco, he’s our next pick.
Johann Zarco
As we said, Zarco is right on Quartararo’s tail in the World’s Rider Championship race. The two are both Frenchman and are putting Spain’s reign of dominance in MotoGP to the ultimate test. The last time a non-Spaniard claimed the championship was 2011 when Casey Stoner of Australia took the honor.
Given how the season has gone through seven races, we wouldn’t fault you for constantly betting on BOTH Quartararo and Zarco to win. While Zarco has yet to place first in 2021, he does have four podium finishes thus far. Eventually, he’s got to breakthrough, right? We think so and that could be as soon as the German GP.
Franco Morbidelli
Let’s call a spade a spade, last year’s second-highest points earner, Morbidelli, is off to a less-than-stellar start in 2021. He’s placed in the podium only once all season long and is currently sitting in lonesome 10th place in the standings. But c’mon, we know Morbidelli is better than he’s shown. Significantly better than this, in fact.
We believe he’s worth a “flyer” bet here in case he finally decides to show up at Sachsenring. The talent is certainly there and he’s a good value bet given his esteemed background.
