2026/27 European club football is now firmly underway, and we are ready to return to the international circuit once again.

With the thrills and spills of this summer’s FIFA World Cup still fresh in the memory, domestic and continental competitions have now started all over Europe. A crazy summer transfer window saw some huge deals take place, and the UEFA Champions League has already seen some top teams show their strength ahead of what promises to be an action-packed campaign.

What’s been happening this week?

The English Premier League saw a huge game between Man Utd and Man City, with the Cityzens coming out on top 1-0 in controversial fashion thanks to Erling Haaland’s goal, which should have been disallowed. Arsenal also continued their 100% start to the season.

Europe’s top leagues are also underway, with all of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Bayern Munich starting excellently, while European and French champions Paris Saint-Germain have struggled to hit the ground running.

The Champions League also saw its first round of fixtures, with PSG sitting top of the standings following a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava. Man Utd also returned to the competition with a 4-0 win over Sabah.

The MLS season continued with Nashville sitting nine points clear of reigning champions Inter Miami, with Lionel Messi’s side having won just one of their last nine games in all competitions.

England

The reigning champions Arsenal have made light work of the opposition so far this season, winning all four Premier League games against Coventry City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Sunderland to sit top of the table. The only other team to win all their games is Man City, with Enzo Maresca leading his side to victory against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Coventry, and Man Utd.

Liverpool have continued to transition under new manager Andoni Iraola, and the team are unbeaten in the league, although they have won just one of their four games. Chelsea have seven points from 12 under Xabi Alonso, having been held to a 2-2 draw by newly-promoted Hull, who sit fourth in the table following a stunning start.

Despite spending around £400m in the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur are yet to score a goal in the Premier League this season, losing twice and drawing twice to sit 17th, with manager Roberto De Zerbi under pressure. Aston Villa have also struggled after losing the spine of their team in the transfer market, with Unai Emery’s side losing three of their four games and scoring just once in the process.

Spain

Barcelona have started their La Liga title defence in picture-perfect fashion, winning each of their first five games and scoring 21 goals in the process, as Lamine Yamal continues his push to win the Ballon d’Or.

Real Madrid have responded with five wins from their first six games, including a late 3-2 win over Elche this week thanks to young striker Carlos Espi, who came off the bench to net the winner just four minutes later in stoppage time.

The two teams will meet each other in the first El Clasico of the season next month, while Jose Mourinho’s side will take on local rivals Atletico Madrid on September 20th.

Germany

The Bundesliga season has begun and surprisingly, Bayern Munich are not sitting top of the table after three games. Vincent Kompany’s side have won two and drawn one of their opening three games, leaving them in fourth place, while Borussia Dortmund and Freiburg are the only teams to have won every game so far.

France

Paris Saint-Germain are, rightfully, the favorites to win the French title yet again this season, but Luis Enrique’s side have started the campaign slowly, with just one win in their first four games. The team has managed just six goals in those four matches, with new signing Ferran Torres hitting the ground running with six goals in four starts since joining from Barcelona.

Italy

Inter Milan wrestled the Serie A title back from Napoli last season, and have started the new campaign in perfect fashion with four wins from four games, with 13 goals scored. But they’ve been slightly bettered by AS Roma, who have also won all four games, scoring 12 goals, but only conceding one, to sit top of the table. The two teams will meet in a huge clash on September 19th.

MLS

Nashville sit top of the MLS Eastern Conference by nine points ahead of Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami side, despite the addition of superstar Brazilian Casemiro in the summer transfer window.

Vancouver lead the Western Conference by just three points ahead of the Houston Dynamo, but have played a game fewer, while FC Dallas are also three points off the summit.

The biggest betting soccer storylines this week

• Arsenal are the heavy odds-on favorites to win the Premier League again after their perfect start to the season, and are currently priced at -144. City have impressed too, and sit at +225, which is a big change from the +410 they were earlier in the campaign. Chelsea are way out at +1400 following their defeat to Arsenal.
• The 26/27 Champions League league phase draw was made with clubs discovering their 8 respective fixtures. The opening games took place on 8-10 September, and FC Barcelona have been installed as the favorites at +471, a price which has dropped considerably from the +650 they were before the tournament started. Holders PSG (+521) are second favorites to win a third consecutive continental crown, slightly ahead of Arsenal (+525) and Bayern Munich (+567)
• Despite their struggles recently, Inter Miami remain favorites to win the MLS Cup at +450. Vancouver and Nashville, the current conference leaders, sit marginally back at +500.
• The UEFA Europa League is set to begin on September 16th, and AC Milan, Juventus, and Bayer Leverkusen have all been installed as co-favorites at +800. English side Bournemouth are next at +1200, while Portuguese giants Benfica are narrowly behind at +1400.

Games to keep your eyes on this month

• Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid: A big game in the Spanish title race as the two teams from the capital go head-to-head. Diego Simeone’s side have started well with three wins from their five games, and will look to put a dent in their rivals’ title charge.
• Inter Milan vs AS Roma: A top of the table clash in Italy between the only two teams in Serie A to have a 100% record after four games.
• Fulham vs Manchester United: Man Utd have won just one of their first four games in the Premier League and need to get back to winning ways before the international break.
• Marseille vs PSG: Le Classique has been dominated by PSG in recent years, but with their poor form so far this season, they will need to be at their best to claim a win over their fierce rivals and get their title charge back on track.
• England vs Spain: International football will return this month, and England will take on the reigning World and European champions at Wembley Stadium in their first game since the World Cup, when they meet in the UEFA Nations League.
