We’re inching closer and closer to big-time ATP Finals events in Milan and Turin, but not before the Swiss Indoor Basel, which is happening right now through Sunday, October 30. It’s one of the last tourneys where the top-ranked players can jockey for qualification in the year-end tourneys. We’ve examined the playing field and we’re confident in our betting picks to win Basel. Keep reading for free advice.
We need to begin with the current betting odds, however. The best betting sites for tennis have pegged the following players as the top favorites to win the tourney:
We should note a few big names are not in the mix in Switzerland. The likes of Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem, and Stefanos Tsitsipas chose to compete at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria.
2022 ATP Basel Preview
This is the first ATP Basel competition in three years. No surprise, the pandemic was responsible for the past two years of cancellations. For perspective on how far 2019 feels, Roger Federer is the defending champion of the event. Of course, the Swiss native Federer is retired as a month ago and not here to defend his crown. But let’s look elsewhere to preview the 2022 ATP Basel.
The field started high in star power. Alcaraz and Rudd were the top-two ranked players in the mix at No. 1 and No. 3 respectively. For Alcaraz, it’s only his second event since capturing the U.S. Open title. He’s hoping it turns out better than his first when he was shockingly upset in the Astana opener. Speaking of which, that’s the exact fate Rudd suffered at Basel. Rudd has already been eliminated by Stan Wawrinka in the Round of 32 so cross him off your bingo card.
Speaking of Wawrinka, his upset of Rudd may not be all that surprising. The former No. 3 player is playing on his home turf here in Switzerland. Not only that but Wawrinka is a two-time semi-finalist at Basel and is not far removed from advancing to the last four in Metz.
One more name we’ll call out that’s participating is Andy Murray. The veteran has not participated in this event since he was 18 years old — way back in 2005. Murray had to rally hard past Roman Safiullin 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round. But he’s in, and the former No. 1 might be a dark horse the rest of the way. Speaking of which, let’s cover who our actual bets to win this thing are.

2022 ATP Basel Betting Picks
We’re going to give you two betting picks to win the 2022 ATP Basel. One choice is our most confident one, while the other is our under-the-radar play. We think both are worth separate bets, but that’s if you have the funds to do so. Here are our choices:
Safe Bet – Carlos Alcaraz
Is anyone surprised by this? No, but you should be because Alcaraz is the best player in the field, hands down. In round two, he overcame Jack Draper, another rising star in the sport (who could become the Spaniard’s long-time rival). Alcaraz needed three sets and a comeback to do it, but he’s through and has a manageable path the rest of the way.
Some bettors are arguing Alcaraz has his eyes on Turin instead of this, but we don’t buy it. He just became world No. 1. There’s a certain pressure to deliver right now when that ranking is novel and means something in his young career. So we’re betting Alcaraz here. With Rudd out, there’s really no one left in the field with the talent to rival Alcaraz.
Darkhorse Bet — Alex de Minaur
Alex de Minaur has a tough draw in the round of 32 against Switzerland’s own Holger Rune. De Minaur’s quickness is something to marvel at and truly an elite characteristic among ATP competitors. We think that quickness gives him an edge against Rune, who is fresh off a Stockholm title (which also means he’s fatigued here somewhat).
IF he can survive, we could see the Australian making a run. Post-Rune, De Minaur would not only avoid Alcaraz until the finale but also the second-most favored player Auger-Aliassime. That’s why we love his price here at +1600.
