Resurgent Nadal Favored at 2017 French Open

We’re almost four months into the 2017 ATP season and, from the looks of things, it’s going to be a pretty interesting year. The 2016 season proved to be a two-horse race between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, and the 2016 French Open was a microcosm, featuring a fierce battle between the two top-ranked players in the world. The 2017 season has seen a resurgence of legend’s past, namely Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who have their own epic French Open history. Will Roland Garros provide another thrilling finale in 2017 (May 22 – June 11)? And, if so, who will it feature?

Both Murray and Djokovic have had a rough season so far. Djokovic started the year with a win at the Qatar Open but has failed to achieve anything else. Murray hasn’t been much better, winning only the Dubai Tennis Championships so far. Still, Murray remains the no. 1-ranked player in the world and Djokovic remains second. So it’s no surprise that they’re high on the list of favorites coming into Roland Garros.

The biggest story of the year so far is the aforementioned resurgence of Nadal and Federer. Nadal has yet to claim his first win, but he reached the finals of the Australian Open, Mexican Open, and Miami Open. Meanwhile, Federer is off to a stellar start, picking up wins at the Australian Open, Miami Open, and Indian Wells.

The two tennis legends have already met three times this year, with Federer coming out on top each time. But the French Open is Nadal territory, and this is his chance to reclaim the clay courts. He ruled the French Open for a decade, winning nine times between 2005 and 2014, so naturally he starts as the favorite this year.

Federer has raked in the most ATP points so far and is in great form, but the clay courts aren’t exactly his specialty.

Stan Wawrinka also features among the favorites. The Swiss player has suffered two big losses to fellow countryman Federer already, first in the semifinals of the Australian Open and then in the finals of the Indian Wells Masters. The 2015 French Open champ will be looking for his first win of the year in France.
