The best possible women’s US Open final will take the stage this Sunday, September 7th when Serena Williams takes on Caroline Wozniacki for the title of the last Grand Slam of the season, at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Serena Williams beat Ekaterina Makarova on Friday 6-1, 6-3 in a semifinal triumph that was expected.
“She wants to win and go for her first Grand Slam, and I want to go for a little bit of history,” said Williams of Caroline, who will try to tie Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert with 18 major titles.
Serena and Caroline are actually friends off the court, but on Sunday they will have to put that aside.
“She’s a fun girl, fun to be around,” Wozniacki said of Serena, after reaching her first Grand Slam final in five years. “She makes me laugh. An inspiring person.”
“We said when the tournament started, ‘Look we’re in separate sides of the draw; we can meet in the final,” Wozniacki said. “She’s obviously on fire, but we’ve had two close matches in the last few weeks. Hopefully, it’s third time a charm. This time it’s going to be different. I have nothing to lose, only things to win.”
Wozniacki got here after Peng Shuai was forced to retire because of the heat. Caroline was leading the game 7-6, 4-3.
The US Open women’s final odds have Serena Williams as the main favorite listed -600 to win while Caroline Wozniacki is +400.
