The FIFA Golden Ball is awarded every four years to the best player at the World Cup. Not to be confused with the Golden Boot prize for top goalscorer, the Golden Ball assesses players more broadly for their performances. Take a look at some of the leading contenders and their odds for 2026.

The World Cup hosts some of the greatest footballers on the planet and this year is no different. Many of the top names in the sport will be present in North America this summer looking to add the FIFA Golden Ball to their list of personal accolades, and no doubt take home the World Cup itself on July 19.

Let’s have a look at some of the favorites:

Lamine Yamal

The favorite. Yamal is a prodigious talent with international trophy-winning experience, still some way from entering his third decade of life. He is quite possibly the most decisive player in world football and plays with a nonchalance that belies his young age. When he has the ball – and both his club and international side work to ensure that is as often as possible – expectation rises among fans and teammates alike. He has a certain je ne sais quoi which marks him out even among such exalted company.

Yamal is a doubt of the opening fixture and he may well miss the second as well due to injury. But it is a sign of Yamal’s importance to his team that there was never a thought that he would miss out on the 26-man squad.

Yamal’s knock means he could struggle to get up to speed early on his return, but if Spain go far, as is expected, Yamal will be aiming to peak just at the right time to take home the plunder and the plaudits.

Harry Kane

The England captain is second favorite to win the award after a stunning season for his club side, Bayern Munich where he helped himself to 61 goals in all competitions on their way to a domestic double, including a hattrick in the German Cup Final. He is also his country’s all time leading scorer and has 8 FIFA World Cup goals to his name in two previous tournaments.

There is the view that Kane may arrive at this World Cup in better condition than previous tournaments due to leaving the relentless intensity of the Premier League in 2023.

After penalty heartache in the quarter-finals in Qatar four years ago, Kane will be determined to go deeper into the tournament this time around. England are well set up for a long run to the latter stages and expect to see their captain at the very heart of it. He is at the very peak of his powers right now and will take some stopping.

Michael Olise

His spell in the Premier League was full of promise but after two years at Bayern, the France winger is now considered one of the world’s best forwards as he travels to his first World Cup. A sign of his standing is that he is expected to start for France ahead of many luxuriant attacking options.

A left footed winger most comfortable cutting inside from the right onto his stronger foot, he has lit up the Bundesliga and the Champions’ League in the last two seasons. Goals and assists have come in abundance, and trophies have followed them.

He has only fifteen caps for France so far at the age of 24 so will be keen to make up for lost time with the national team. There is huge competition for places in the French squad, but Olise has enough to hold his own and then some.

Kylian Mbappé

The last World Cup Golden Boot winner will be looking to add the Golden Ball to his collection this time around, as well as lift the main prize as captain of his country.

Four years ago he almost singlehandedly dragged France to glory only to be denied on penalties and had that shootout gone differently then Mbappe may well have won the Golden Ball in Qatar.
The Real Madrid forward enters this tournament within reach of becoming his country’s record goalscorer at 27 years old, off the back of more than forty goals in Spain for his club. At the last tournament, Mbappe also became the first man since Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score three goals in the World Cup Final. He has almost unmatched big game pedigree which makes him a very enticing bet for this prize.

With France expected to go far into the knockout rounds, Mbappe is often a very good answer, whatever the question.

Lionel Messi

The man widely considered to be the greatest footballer of all time could retain the Golden Ball with another win here, having already claimed it twice before. The only player in history to have won multiple World Cup Golden Balls, Lionel Messi is an enticing prospect in 2026 as well.

Argentina are among the favorites again arriving in the US as World and South American champions, after retaining the Copa America in the States two years ago. Messi is now nearly 39 and unmistakably on the wane, even if he continues to set records for his club side Inter Miami.

But Messi on the wane is better than many great players in their prime such is the weight of the Argentina captain’s achievements. His status in his homeland and elsewhere is now mythical after leading the Albiceleste to a third world title, and he may just indulge us all one more time.

Vinicius Junior

After a less than stellar season at club level for the Madrid forward, Vini Jr now has the opportunity to make a more meaningful impact for Brazil.

Vinicius is a player who attracts much attention. The two-time European Champion is often at the centre of the action, on and off the pitch. In Brazil, he is often criticised for failing to replicate his club form for the Selecao but after reuniting with his former club coach in the national team, Vini Jr could make a splash in this tournament.

He is a scintillating watch with the ball at his feet and has big game pedigree with two goals in Champions League finals to his name.

Neymar’s inclusion in the Brazil squad is the sort of distraction that may benefit Vinicius. With some of the attention taken up by Brazil’s other star attraction, Vini might make hay in the US sun.

Bruno Fernandes

The Portugal linchpin won the prestigious FWA award for the Player of the Year in England this season and is in the form of his life heading into his third World Cup tournament.

Fernandes produced chance after chance for his Manchester United teammates in the Premier League last term, breaking the record for most assists recorded in a single season. With Portugal among the favorites to win the tournament, the former Sporting playmaker is an outside shot to perhaps write his name into the history books again.

World Cup Golden Ball

The FIFA World Cup Golden Ball is awarded to the best player at the FIFA World Cup. It is decided through a two-step process by which FIFA’s Technical Study group, an elite panel of ex-players, coaches and analysts, compiles a shortlist of prominent performers, while representatives from the global football media vote for a winner. There is also a Silver Ball and a Bronze Ball for the players who finish second and third respectively.

First awarded at Spain 1982, the prize has been claimed by some of the finest players to ever play the game.

World Cup Golden Boot

The FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is given to the topscoring individual player at the FIFA World Cup. A less subjective award than the Golden Ball, it is entirely based on putting the ball in the back of the net. There are no points for artistic merit, just getting the ball over the line. They all count!

What usually wins the Golden Ball?

There are a number of factors that put a player up for consideration.

Firstly, a good team run is essential. No Golden Ball winner has exited the tournament earlier than the semi-final stage so getting to the last four is a good start.

Some defining performances in big games is another way of stating a player’s claim. Knockout games live long in the memory and great individual displays often even longer, so a matchwinning turn in a high-stakes contest can swing the voters.

The tension of the triumph and the wait for its confirmation only seemed to enhance the scale of the achievement. Messi, of course, won his second World Cup Golden Ball in the aftermath of that Final.

Longshots to watch

Ousmane Dembélé

Voted the Ballon D’Or winner for the best player in the world in 2025, Dembele could well be crowned the best player at the World Cup too.

He is a delightfully balanced footballer. As capable of doing everything with one foot as he is with the other, Dembele is lightning fast and technically superb. Back-to-back Champions League titles with PSG add only more heft to the Frenchman’s reputation and he is a smart outside bet for the Golden Ball, if as predicted, France progress a long way in this tournament.

Pedri

The Spain midfielder is the conductor of his club side, Barcelona, and looks set to have a similar influence here for his national team. This will be 23 year old’s second World Cup and Pedri’s experience belies his age.

He already plays with a maturity and circumspection most players never attain, and his role at the centre of everything Spain do means he can direct the play and pace of the match to his liking. His influence over top level matches increases year on year and this could be Pedri’s tournament.

Vitinha

Another serial winner with PSG, Vitinha has a decent claim to being the most important player in the world for the past two seasons. He has twice steered his team to the Champions’ League with laser-guided shooting, impudent invention and no lack of guile or grit.

He lines up this summer for a very strong Portugal team who should advance to the latter stages, hoping to transfer his club form onto the international stage. If he does so, there are few better players in the world.

Can a player win the Golden Ball without winning the World Cup itself?

In short, yes! Only 4 of the 11 Golden Ball winners have also won the tournament. As mentioned earlier however, all of them have at least made the semi-final stage.

Messi picked up his first Golden Ball award in 2014 after losing the Final. Luka Modric did the same in 2018, along with Zinedine Zidane in 2006, Oliver Kahn in 2002, and Ronaldo with Brazil in 1998.

Diego Forlan in 2010 and Toto Schillaci, 1990, both managed to win the award without reaching the tournament final.
