IPL Picks; Back the Knight Riders to bounce back against the Capitals

The Delhi Capitals take on the Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 28 of the 2023 Indian Premier League on Thursday. The Capitals are winless from their five matches, the Knight Riders have two wins from their five played so far. Will the Capitals finally get their first win of the season when the teams meet? Or will Kolkata heap more misery on David Warner and his Capitals’ team? Let’s take a look with our latest cricket betting picks.

  • What; 2023 Indian Premier League – Match 28
  • Who; Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders
  • Where; Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, India
  • When; Thursday, April 20th, 2023
  • Time; 10 am ET

This will be the sixth attempt by the Delhi Capitals to secure a win in the 2023 IPL. So far this season has just been utter despair for the Capitals who find themselves stuck to the bottom of the table with five defeats from their five matches played.

As well as being bottom of the points table, they’ve also seen themselves plummet from being joint second favorites at the start of the competition, to now being last in the betting to win the 2023 IPL. And as a quick look at our IPL odds table below will show, it’s a distant last place.

The betting favorites are the Rajasthan Royals at +300. The Royals have won their last three, and with Jos Buttler looking in good form at the top of the order, they are a lot of people’s pick to win the competition outright. The Royals closest betting rivals are Gujarat at +400, and the Chennai Super Kings at +450.

Below we have put together an IPL betting table using odds taken from the best online sportsbooks.

Delhi Capitals; Desperate for a win

In their last outing, the Capitals lost to the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23 runs. The Capitals were set 175 to win by RCB, but that was never likely once they lost three early wickets – at one stage they were three down for two runs after 2.2 Overs. Were it not for some middle order resistance from Manish Pandey (he scored 50 from 38 balls), the result would have been crushing.

Make no mistake, this wasn’t a huge total the Capitals were chasing. In an IPL competition that has seen numerous scores over 200, the Capitals had done well to restrict RCB to 174/6 from their 20 Overs. So to flop to 151/9 from their 20 Overs would have been bitterly disappointing for coach Ricky Ponting, and stand-in captain David Warner. But this is how it has been for the Capitals this season.

Can the Kolkata Knight Riders get their season back on track?

As for Kolkata, well, they started off their season with a seven run defeat to the Punjab Kings in Match 2. They then recovered well to win their next two. First they defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 81 runs, and then they beat the Gujarat Titans by 3 wickets. In both of these wins, the Knight Riders posted scores over 200.

What might be regarded as something approaching normal service has since followed for the Knight Riders, as they then proceeded to lose their next two. It’s not so much the losses that Kolkata fans are accustomed to, more the inconsistency.

Win one, lose one – or win two, lose two, etc. But either way, after two magnificent wins, and they were magnificent wins, maybe Knight Rider fans were starting to dream of something special this season. So to lose to the Sunrisers by 23 runs (albeit with scoring over 200 again), and the Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets, would have been very frustrating.

Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders Betting

It doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom for the Knight Riders though. A win over Delhi will get them back in the mix for a place in the top four. A win for the Knight Riders would see them right back in the mix. And the best cricket betting sites are favoring them to bounce back against Delhi.

Even though they are the favorites, the Knight Riders are only -125 to win, with the Delhi Capitals at +105. Considering the Capitals have lost five from five, it’s surprising to see them so close to the Knight Riders on the moneyline. But this is only a two horse race. And although the Capitals are performing poorly, they are still well able to beat anybody on their day.

Our Picks

Whether the Capitals have the beating of anybody or not, it’s going to take a huge leap of faith to choose them as our cricket betting pick in their current form. So when it comes to picking a match winner, there can only be one bet to be had here. It has to be a wager on the Kolkata Knight Riders for our betting pick.

Finally, we’ve looked through the betting and come up with a second pick. Kolkata have topped 200 in three of their last four matches. The team has been scoring plenty of runs, with Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana heavily contributing. In fact, Iyer carried their whole innings in the recent loss to the Mumbai Indians, scoring 104 off 51 balls. This, in a team total of 185/6.

Iyer is +275 to be top batter, Nitish is +350. Nitish is the captain, and he has already shown he is prepared to bat through the innings for the team. This means he is not always throwing caution to the wind, and this could mean he’s more likely to be there at the business end of the innings. And that makes him a good call to be top KKR batter in any match.
