Keep the faith with Australia in the 4th Ashes Test against England

The Ashes series between England and Australia just seems to get more and more exciting with every match. This week it’s the 4th Test, and just like in the previous match, England has to win if they are to keep their hopes of regaining the Ashes alive. Here in our latest cricket betting picks, we tell you whether England will do it. Or whether this will be the match where Australia clinch the series and finally win the Urn again on English soil?

  • What; The Ashes 4th Test match
  • Who; England vs Australia (1-2)
  • Where; Old Trafford, Manchester, England
  • When; July 19th-23rd, 2023

The state of play

Australia is 2-1 up in the series with two matches left to play. As the holders of the Ashes, if the series ends up level, the Australians will retain the Ashes. And as this is Test match cricket, matches can be drawn, meaning this series could yet finish 2-2.

But the first prize for Australia is to win the series and the Ashes outright on English soil for the first time since 2001. For that to happen, they have to either draw the last two matches, and win the series 2-1. Or win one of the remaining two Test matches.

For England, the equation is simple. For Ben Stokes’ England team to reclaim the Urn, they need to win the 4th and 5th Test matches to clinch the series 3-2.

England vs Australia Ashes 4th Test Betting

For the first time in this series, England are the favorites to win the Test match with the best cricket betting sites.

On the money line, England is +135 to win the 4th Test. Australia is +155, and the draw is +325. In the draw, no bet market, England is -125, and Australia is +100.

In the first three Test matches, Australia were the marginal favorites. England had been in with a chance of winning all three fixtures but somehow managed to self-destruct in the opening two. But in winning the 3rd Test at Headingley, the bookmakers now feel England deserve to be favorites for the 4th Test.

Both teams have selection issues!

England hasn’t taken a backward step in the opening three matches, and that has included naming their team way before the morning of the start of the Test match. They have continued with this theme ahead of the 4th Test, and on Monday they announced their playing XI for this week’s showdown.

They have made one change from the team that played in the 3rd Test, and that’s the return of James Anderson, who replaces Ollie Robinson.

England has a problem, though. They tried Harry Brook at No.3 in the 1st innings of the 3rd Test, and it didn’t work out. Brook returned to his usual No.5 position in the batting lineup and scored the pivotal knock in the 2nd innings that won the match.

All-rounder Moeen Ali tried the No.3 slot in the 2nd innings and also failed miserably. So what will England do for the 4th Test? They say Moeen Ali is going to bat there again. But this could yet change.

Do the Aussies stick or twist with David Warner?

As for Australia, they are contemplating dropping opener David Warner, who is having a torrid time in England, just like he did in 2019.

Warner is averaging 23.5 in this series, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. In the 2nd Test at Lord’s, he made 66 in the 1st innings, and his score of 25 in the 2nd innings provided Australia with a solid foundation to set a match-winning total.

The problem Australia have is they want to bring back Cameron Green, who missed the 3rd Test with an injury. But his replacement in the 3rd Test, Mitchell Marsh, scored a magnificent century in the 1st innings, and chipped in with wickets in both innings.

Dropping Marsh would be a tough call to make. But if Australia wants to select both Green and Marsh, Warner could be the guy to miss out.

Our 4th Test Ashes Betting Picks

The weather isn’t looking great in Manchester this week, and that plays into the hands of the Australians. They may be looking to win the series outright, but they will happily draw the series and return to Australia as the holders of the Ashes.

This means the Aussies can play it safe in the 4th Test. Whereas England has to go all out for the win.

So with the Aussies likely to play safe, we suspect they will stick with David Warner. If they do that, there is the possibility he could get out cheaply, but the Aussies keep the balance of their side.

In this series, the Australians have made fewer mistakes than England, and is why they lead it 2-1. We think they won’t make the mistake of dropping Warner, and if they stick with the opener, we think the Aussies will win the 4th Test.
