Three Man Race for Calder
Trevor Zegras (+150) stole the show in the NHL All-Star Weekend’s Breakaway Challenge with a Dodgeball-inspired blindfolded snipe. The 20-year-old also has two highlight-of-the-year contenders with an alley-oop assist over the net and a ‘Michigan’-style lacrosse goal.
With three assists on Saturday, the Ducks center is just a point back of Lucas Raymond (+240) for the rookie scoring lead. Having played five more games, Detroit’s fourth-overall pick in the 2020 draft has matched Zegras’ 13 goals while assisting on 26.

Steve Yzerman went off the board when he picked Moritz Seider (+300) sixth overall in 2019. And the big German blueliner has proven the Red Wings’ franchise savior right so far, leading all rookies in ice time 22:51 while ranking third in scoring with 35 points.
The 20-year-old also has impressive underlying metrics, captains the power play and logs significant minutes on the penalty kill.
Calder longshots
Anton Lundell (+1200) was named the NHL’s “Rookie of the Month” for January with 17 points and a +20 rating in 15 games. The 20-year-old Finland native isn’t getting anywhere near the power-play minutes as Zegras, Raymond and Seider, but his strong two-way play is a big reason why the Panthers are first in the Eastern Conference.
Michael Bunting (+1200) would probably be the choice of all Maple Leafs fans. Squeaking under the Calder eligibility requirements, the 26-year-old leads all freshman with 16 goals while playing on a line with Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews. Funnily enough, Matthews won this award five years ago, yet is two years younger than Bunting.

Best bet
The Calder Trophy has been awarded to a defenseman in just two of the past 11 years, but that’s only because it’s a much harder position for first-year players to master. With none of the forwards running away with the rookie scoring lead, and Seider squarely in the race himself, the Red Wings rearguard is poised to capture the award.
Bet on Moritz Seider at +300.
