Surrey favored for first T20 Blast win since 2003

The 2024 T20 Blast has reached the quarter-finals stage. Only eight teams remain, and it’s now win or bust as the competition enters the knockouts. The favorite to win the title is Surrey. In our cricket betting picks we tell you if the South London team is worth betting on.

  • What: 2024 T20 Blast
  • Who: Surrey, Lancashire, Birmingham Bears, Sussex, Somerset, Northants, Gloucester, Durham
  • Quarter-Finals: September 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th
  • Finals Day: Saturday, September 14th

Notts Outlaws were the favorites to win the T20 Blast at the start of the summer. How wrong that turned out to be. A disappointing group stage saw the Outlaws finish bottom of Group A, with just three wins from their 14 matches.

Surrey started the competition as the second betting favorite at +650. The London team kept their side of the bargain, topping Group B with 20 points. They are now the outright winner betting favorites to snare the 2024 edition at odds of +350.

Overall, the betting looks very close. There is no stand-out team, with all eight in with a realistic chance of lifting the trophy on Finals Day in mid-September.

Surrey +350

The way these competitions work is that Surrey is always one of the betting favorites. But the reality is that Surrey rarely wins the trophy. Indeed, Surrey hasn’t lifted this trophy since its inaugural year in 2003. And the last time they made the final was in 2020 when they lost to Notts.

In this year’s competition, Surrey have been in good form. Captained by England all-rounder Chris Jordan, Surrey won nine matches, with one tie and one no result. This saw them top the group ahead of Sussex by two points.

One of the reasons why Surrey are the favorites is because of their strength in depth.

Stand-in England Test captain, Ollie Pope, would be in their strongest playing eleven. He probably won’t be available for Tuesday’s quarter-final against Durham, as he will be preparing to captain England in the 3rd Test against Sri Lanka starting on September 6th.

Also not available will be Jamie Smith. The Surrey reserve wicketkeeper batter is playing for England as well. Yes, such is the county’s strength in depth, their reserve wicketkeeper finds it easier to get a game for England behind the stumps than he does his county.

Even without Pope and Smith, Surrey will be able to put out a top-class team that boasts internationals like Will Jacks, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, and Chris Jordan, along with young exciting prospect Tom Lawes.

Their bowling could be stronger, and we feel this is a reason for giving the London-based county a miss at odds of just +350.

Lancashire Lightning +400

Lancashire Lightning took their place in the last eight of the competition by finishing third in Group A with 17 points. The Lightning only won seven matches out of their 14. Matches 11 and 12 were abandoned without a ball bowled, nearly costing them a place in the top four.

Ultimately, they defeated Notts by eight wickets in their penultimate fixture, and that was enough to secure their spot in the quarter-finals where they will face Sussex in Hove.

The bookmakers can’t separate the two teams ahead of Wednesday’s fixture. Lancashire are -110, and so are the Sussex Sharks. The winner of this match may well become the favorite to win the competition outright.

The Lightning has the big-hitting Phil Salt at the top of their batting order. Salt could have England white-ball captain Jos Buttler back alongside him, as Buttler is targeting this fixture as his comeback match from injury.

Liam Livingstone is also a dangerous player for the Lightning, who have a good array of all-rounders like George Dockrell and Chris Green in their middle order, to supplement their top-order power hitters.

We say the Lightning is a good betting pick to win the competition.

Birmingham Bears +450

The best cricket betting sites make the Birmingham Bears their third favorite to win the T20 Blast at +450.

The Bears topped Group A with 20 points from 14 games. As a result of topping the group, their reward is a home fixture against Gloucester on Friday, September 6th. The Bears are favored to win the match at -163, with Gloucester the outsiders at +130.

Birmingham has looked strong in this year’s competition. At the top of their batting, they can call on captain Moeen Ali and Alex Davies. After Sam Hain, the Bears are into their all-rounders with Dan Mousley, Chris Benjamin, and Jacob Bethell all occupying the higher middle-order places.

But the biggest strength of the Bears is arguably their spin twins Jake Lintott and Danny Briggs.

Briggs is the top wicket-taker in the 2024 tournament with 27 victims. Lintott has 18 wickets, and it could be argued there is better to come from him. The duo in tandem makes the Bears a real threat to win this competition.
