Once the regular season wraps up on August 26 with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 in Daytona, the playoffs begin on September 3 with the Cook Out Southern 500 and run through November 5 when the NASCAR CUP Series Championship Race takes place in Phoenix.

Kyle Larson
Kyle Larson is racing well in 2023. He has wins at Richmond, Martinsville, and he also took first in the more recent All-Star Race. He also finished as runner-up at Las Vegas and Kansas.
One of the most talented NASCAR drivers in the sport, Larson is looking to bounce back this year. He won the Championship in 2021 with 10 wins and 20 top-five finishes. However, he fell short of repeating in 2022. Last year, Larson finished with three wins and 13 top-five finishes. He currently has eight top-five finishes to go with his three wins in 2023.
Expectations are high for Larson this year, and he is projected to earn playoff points and is second in laps lead in 2023 with 588.
William Byron
Currently No. 2 in the points standings, William Byron is dominating the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series. He has three wins in 2023, seven top-five finishes, and nine finishes in the top 10. No other driver comes close to the 717 laps he has led this year. His seven stage wins are two more than the next highest driver for the season. However, his 14th-place finish at Sonoma ended his two-race run of top-10 finishes. Despite that finish, Byron has the highest projected playoff points total at 27, which puts him one ahead of Martin Truex, Jr.
One thing to keep in mind about Byron’s numbers is that he would be in the points total lead had he not been given a 60-point penalty after the April race in Richmond. If NASCAR had not penalized Byron, he would be in first place in points, 47 ahead of Truex.
Kyle Busch
The winner of the NASCAR Cup Championship in 2015 and 2019, Kyle Busch, is once again in the mix to win. Currently in sixth place in the points race, the 38-year-old has three wins in 2023, five top-five finishes, and nine finishes in the top 10. He has led a respectable 214 laps and has two stage wins to his name this year. Busch is projected to earn 22 playoff points, which puts him in third place in that category behind Byron and Truex.
Busch has performed exceptionally well in his past two races, winning at the World Wide Technology Raceway and finishing in second place in Sonoma.
