Also in this group are France and Honduras; which means Ecuador and Switzerland are obligated to beat each other in order to have a shot in the zone.
Ecuador is a strong, skilled group that had great moments in the qualification; they could be the surprise in the tournament.
“Like I always tell the players, I want to play seven games,” Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda said. “That is what I want at the World Cup.”
Switzerland is perhaps the weakest of the eight group heads; they are not favorites to win group E.
“It’s a very strong group,” said Switzerland coach Omar Hitzfeld. “All three teams are not easy to beat; otherwise they would not be qualified for the World Cup. But we have had a very good preparation so far. We do have the potential to qualify for the round of the last 16. That is our goal. Then there are no limits.”
Switzerland is listed +160 to win the game and Ecuador is +240; the draw was rated at +212.
“Very, very difficult,” Hitzfeld said in an interview with Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. “It cannot be a coincidence that a European team couldn’t win the World Cup held in South America. Not in Uruguay, not in Mexico, not in Argentina and for sure not in Brazil.”
