2022 begins with Bayern Munich once again at the summit of German football. Can anybody stop the reigning champions from clinching yet another title?
Who do Bettors Favor?
With a six-point lead Bayern look well on course for a tenth title and so it is not surprising to find top online sportsbooks installing them as the clear favorites. The reigning champions are priced at around -4000 while their nearest challengers, Dortmund are available at +1600. Beyond those two, bettors seem to have very little interest, with RB Leipzig priced at around +25000 and Bayer Leverkusen at +20000.
Betting on the Bundesliga Winner
Bayern Munich continues to dominate the Bundesliga and appears to be on track to win their tenth title in a row. Julian Nagelsmann, who joined the club in July after two years at RB Leipzig, appears to be on course to continue Bayern’s winning streak.
Things haven’t gone quite as smoothly as the league table suggests, however. Bayern had appeared vulnerable before their game against Dortmund on December 4. A loss in Augsburg and an underwhelming win over Arminia Bielefeld had created some doubts, and there was also the odd 5-0 DFB Pokal defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Subsequently, Bayern went into the halftime break against Mainz a goal down, but have since been really impressive. They fought back to beat Mainz 2-1, then went on to win 5-0 and 4-0 against Stuttgart and Wolfsburg, respectively. Meanwhile, Dortmund’s form has nosedived.
In December, a win against Greuther Fürth was the sole bright spot, with a draw at local rivals Bochum and a defeat at Hertha further exposing their poor away record. This season, Dortmund has lost more games on the road than they have won. In that kind of form it is hard to see them overhauling the reigning champions in 2022.
Which Team is a Good Bet for the Bundesliga Top Four
Assuming Dortmund are assured of a top-four spot, that leaves two Champions League qualification places available and this season the fight seems as intense as usual, with RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen favored by the sportsbooks to secure their places.
Still, at better odds, it could be worth siding with Eintracht Frankfurt, who have made a spectacular comeback after a poor start. Only a few weeks ago, there was much discussion regarding Oliver Glasner’s future, after Die Adler only won one of their first 10 games, and were knocked out of the cup by third-tier Waldhof Mannheim. Frankfurt’s first win of the season came in a shock triumph at Munich, but it was followed by two dismal losses to Hertha and Bochum.
It took a 94th-minute equalizer against RB Leipzig at home to spark a season resurrection. Frankfurt have now won six of their last eight games since the 1-1 tie with Leipzig, climbing rapidly up the table and if they can keep that momentum going, they have a good chance of sneaking into the top four.
Bundesliga Relegation Betting
Greuther Fürth, who were recently promoted to Bundesliga, have only six points from 18 games and appear to be virtually relegated already, but the remaining two relegation zone places are not settled and there are several mid-table teams who could be at risk of being sucked in.
Arminia Bielefeld are still in the drop zone but have picked up seven points from their last nine and have a good chance of pulling clear, while Augsburg have also shown some fighting spirit in recent games. Stuttgart, who drew their most recent game, against lowly Furth, have only won two of their last eleven and they seem to be the team most immediately at risk of being drawn into relegation.
Immediately above Stuttgart in the table sit Wolfsburg, who have been enduring a nightmare season. Six consecutive defeats have dropped them to the bottom five but there is enough talent in their squad to ensure they will be able to avoid the ignominy of relegation. The same can’t be said for Hertha Berlin, who haven’t been able to put together a run of good performances and have conceded nine in their last three Bundesliga outings. They could be an interesting bet if you wanted an alternative to Stuttgart.
Lewandowski Dominates the Bundesliga Top Scorer Markets
Robert Lewandowski has scored 20 goals in 18 Bundesliga games this season, and has failed to get on the scoresheet in only five matches. He can also boast the most shots on goal and he’s hit the woodwork more than anyone else, for good measure. A
fter his incredible 41-goal season last time, the 33-year-old appears to be getting better with age and has shown incredible consistency. His closest pursuers Patrick Schick and Erling Haaland are three and seven goals behind respectively and although you won’t get a good price in the top scorer market, it is hard to see anyone passing Lewandowski.
