Season Can’t End Soon Enough for San Jose

San Jose’s 2022 season never really got going and it cannot end soon enough for fans of the Earthquakes. Aside from a brief period in May when they won three from five shortly after Matias Almeyda was fired, they have generally played poorly throughout.

Luchi Gonzalez was appointed as the new permanent manager last month, but he will not take over formally until the end of the season, for which he is undoubtedly grateful. He has a lot of work ahead of him. San Jose have the second-worst defensive record in MLS and arguably the worst, given that DC United have conceded one more goal but played one more game.

To their credit, they have continued to score goals and their two latest wins, both at home, included a surprise victory over LAFC. Overall, though, this has been a season to forget in San Jose.

Galaxy Playoff Hopes Alive

This has been a strange campaign for LA Galaxy. They started well enough, beating reigning champions NYCFC and were firmly in playoff contention throughout the spring. But from the middle of May, they began to falter. Eight defeats in 13 games up to early August saw them slip out of the playoffs, while local rivals LAFC exerted their dominance on the Western Conference.

Just when it seemed that they were locked into another disappointing regular season, they found some form. Six games unbeaten kept their playoff hopes alive and a big win over Colorado last time took them into seventh place, ahead of Real Salt Lake on goal difference, but with a game in hand. Salt Lake will be Galaxy’s next opponents, after the international break, but they have an opportunity to open up a significant three-point gap ahead of that crucial fixture here.

MLS Betting Head-to-Head Record

These teams were founder members of MLS so the head-to-head record contains plenty of data, going all the way back to the first MLS season in 1996, so although the rivalry between them is not as intense as the El Trafico rivalry, it has a longer and deeper history and was perhaps at its peak between 2001 and 2005 when between them the two teams won four of the five MLS Cups in that period. LA Galaxy have always been considered the bigger team but in recent years, San Jose have had the better of the rivalry, winning nine of their last 20 matches with seven wins for Galaxy and four draws.

The Earthquakes also came out on top in this season’s reverse fixture, back in July. San Jose raced to a 3-0 halftime lead thanks to goals from Cristian Espinoza, Jeremy Ebobisse and Marcos Johan Lopez and then had to endure a Galaxy fight back, eventually hanging on for a 3-2 win.

MLS Betting Team News

Alex Covelo may have wanted his team to finish the season with a minor flourish, but that’s going to be tricky given the number of injury absentees he is facing. Siad Haji, Gilbert Fuentes, Ousseni Bouda, Carlos Akapo, George Asomani, Will Richmond and Casey Wallshave all been struggling with injuries, while Cristian Espinoza and Benjamin Kikanovic are close to suspensions.

Chicharito was on the mark again for Galaxy last time against Colorado, taking his season tally to 15, but Dejan Joveljic’s goalless streak has now hit six games. Otherwise the team news for Galaxy is good although Jonathan Perez and Jorge Villafana are both out with knee injuries and Victor Vazquez, who didn’t feature against the Rapids is one yellow card away from a suspension.

MLS Match Betting Picks

Injury-hit and with nothing to play for, it is very hard to see San Jose getting something out of this game. The fact that this is one of the oldest derbies in MLS may count for something and it is possible that the rivalry will lift the home team players to greater efforts, though that isn’t something to count on.

LA Galaxy have by far the greater motivation here and the stronger team. A victory against San Jose would put them in the driving seat going into their penultimate regular season game and I think that is exactly what they’ll get here, so will be siding with the visitors in the match betting market. Given that San Jose have continued to fire in the goals despite their lowly league position, we could be in for an entertaining game and betting the Over option looks a good bet.
