European Soccer Picks: Napoli Face Tough Atalanta Test

There’s a full schedule of soccer across all the big European leagues and MTS bring you the pick of the weekend betting action in Italy, Germany, England and Spain.

Who do Bettors Favor?

There are some key battles in the title races across four nations in Europe this weekend and betting fans who check out their favorite online sportsbooks will find some open contests.

In Italy, bookmakers give home side Napoli only a slight advantage over Atalanta at +150, with the draw rated at +250, and there’s another intriguing game in Spain, where Sevilla are -100 at home to fellow Europa League winners Villarreal. Things look a little clearer in the Premier League, where high flying Chelsea are -125 to beat West Ham, while the Bayern juggernaut is expected to roll on against Dortmund.

Napoli v Atalanta, 2021-12-04

Napoli made light of their poor recent form, and their lengthening injury list, with a 4-0 thrashing of Lazio last weekend, but some of that good work was undone by a disappointing draw against Sassuolo in midweek, and questions about their ability to sustain a title challenge remain unanswered.

Of particular concern for head coach Luciano Spalletti is the fact that his team conceded two goals in the last 20 minutes when they had the game all but won, and with so many rivals breathing down their neck, Napoli can’t afford to drop many more points if they want to remain top into the New Year.

Of all those chasing rivals, Atalanta are arguably the most dangerous right now. Although their efforts in Europe have been disappointing – a consequence of their relatively small squad – in Serie A they have looked unstoppable in recent weeks, going eight games undefeated.

Their form on the road, which has seen them won their last four, has been particularly impressive and Spalletti will be well aware of the threat posed by these high-pressing, energetic rivals. In that context, a draw would not be the worst result, and that’s how I think this game will end.

West Ham v Chelsea, 2021-11-04

Chelsea are clear favorites here, and given their recent form, that makes a lot of sense, but this trip across the English capital could prove trickier for the Blues than the odds suggest.

Thomas Tuchel’s men have played imperious soccer for much of the season so far, but the winter period is demanding, with a packed fixture list, cold weather and increasing pressure all combining to put a strain on players and coaching staff alike, and that has been evident in Chelsea’s recent games, particularly in midweek, when they had to fight hard to secure a win against lowly Watford.

We also have to take account of the fact that this is a local derby, and one with an occasionally violent history. It is fair to say that the atmosphere at the London Stadium will be hostile and the home side, who play a robust, energetic brand of soccer, will be even more pumped up than usual. Chelsea can match them, but it will be a war of attrition and I think the Hammers can earn a hard-fought point.

Sevilla v Villarreal, 2021-12-04

The 2020 Europa League winners take on the current Europa League holders on Saturday, but it is Sevilla who hold the clear advantage going into this game.

Despite last weekend’s defeat to league leaders Real Madrid, Julen Lopetegui’s side are firmly in contention for a top four spot in La Liga, and have dropped just two points at home so far, winning five of their six games at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

By contrast, Unai Emery’s Villarreal side have been a disappointment so far this season. They’ve only won three games so far and are languishing in mid-table, and although they are hard to beat, they aren’t creating enough chances or scoring enough goals. Sevilla are not exactly prolific in front of goal, either, but they keep finding ways to get the job done and I’m banking on them this weekend.

Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich, 2021-12-04

This clash between the Bundesliga heavyweights has produced some classic games over the years and with only one point separating these teams in the table, this could be another thriller.

Dortmund have lost their last six against these rivals, and haven’t beaten Bayern since 2019, but they will be boosted by the return of Erling Haaland and victory here would be a huge statement for Marcus Rose’s side who are looking like genuine title contenders.

Goals are guaranteed, given that these are two of Europe’s highest scoring teams, and this game could turn out to be the most entertaining of the weekend, but Bayern are capable of matching the home side for goalscoring firepower and a high scoring draw looks the best bet.
