Real Madrid (-1200) vs. Espanyol (+2800) (+1000)
Real Madrid has lost its last three games in a row: 4-2 to AC Milan in a friendly; 2-1 to Valencia in La Liga; and 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey. On Saturday, Los Merengues will try to bounce back when they host Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu (10:00 a.m. Eastern).
In spite of their losing streak, Real is a huge favorite to prevail this weekend, sitting at -1200 in the moneyline. Meanwhile, an Espanyol win will pay +2800 and the draw +1000.
In the standings, Real Madrid is still atop the Spanish tournament with 39 points (13-0-3) and a staggering +41 goal difference. Espanyol is firmly entrenched in the middle of the table with 20 points (5-5-7) and a -5 differential, good enough for tenth.
Despite losing their last three games, the Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti downplayed the severity of the recent performances.
“I think it is an exaggeration to call this a “crisis”. We are not happy and will have to get back to winning ways quickly,” said Ancelotti after losing Atletico Madrid last Wednesday.
In the head-to-head record between these two sides, Real Madrid dominates the series, winning 29 games and losing only eight (in both La Liga and Copa del Rey). The last time Espanyol beat Real Madrid was back in October 2007 (2-1).
Expect Real to start a streak of a different type come Saturday.
