There’s just one match in the MLS this weekend, and it’s Sporting Kansas City versus Austin FC.
Sporting head into this showdown in second place, knowing that a win will see them go top of the Western Conference, albeit, having played one match more than current leaders, Seattle Sounders.
Austin’s focus is at the other end of the table. They currently sit 11th with just 2 wins. Despite this, they can’t be too disheartened, as they’re still only 2 points outside of the play-off positions.

Sporting Kansas City Form
- Last 5 MLS fixtures (most recent first) WWWLW
Sporting sits 2nd in the MLS Western Conference with 16 points from their 8 matches. They have won five, drawn one, and lost two, and sit just 2 points behind unbeaten leaders, Seattle Sounders.
Peter Vermes’ team is in a pretty good run of form. In their last 5 matches, they have picked up 12 points with four wins. All this after a scratchy start to the season.
In their last outing, Sporting had to come from behind to beat Houston Dynamo 3-2 at Children’s Mercy Park.
Sporting dominated the stats with 69% possession. They had 21 attempts on goal, with 9 on target. The Dynamos had just 31% possession and only managed 10 attempts on goal, with just 4 on target.
Prior to that win, Sporting had won their previous two. A 3-1 win away at San Jose, came on the back of a 3-0 home win over Vancouver.
Those back-to-back wins came after Sporting’s second loss of the season, a 1-0 defeat, away to Houston Dynamo.
Prior to that, they beat this weekend’s opponents, Austin 2-1.
Austin FC Form
- Last five MLS fixtures (most recent first) DLLLW
For Austin, the form guide doesn’t read as well. In their last five outings, they have won one, drawn one, and lost three.
The draw was a hard-fought 0-0 away to Seattle Sounders. Austin gave as good as they got at CenturyLink Field, with 43% possession. In attempts on goal, Austin had 12, compared to the hosts 14. In the shots on target count, Austin won that stat 3-2.

Previous to the 0-0 draw, Austin lost 1-0 away to Nashville, and 2-0 away to LA Galaxy. Prior to those two defeats was a 2-1 loss at this weekend’s opponents, Sporting KC (covered in the H2H).
You have to go back 5 matches, all the way to 2nd May, for the last time Austin won. On that occasion, a lone goal by Diego Fagundez saw them win 1-0 away at Minnesota.
These two teams last met on 10th May, with Sporting Kansas coming out 2-1 winners following late goals from Ilie Sánchez (82) and Gadi Kinda (90).
Sporting went behind to a 7th-minute goal by Irishman Jon Gallagher. Austin then gamely held on for a further 75 minutes, despite having Alexander Ring dismissed in the 67th minute.
The stats showed it was a fairly even match in terms of possession, with Sporting at 56%, to Austin’s 44%.
Where the stats tell a different story is in the attempts on goal. Sporting had a massive 25 attempts, to Austin’s 11. While in shots on target, it was closer with Sporting taking that 8-6.
Sporting KC boss Peter Vermes pretty much has a full-strength squad to pick from. Only Brooks Thompson is out, he has back trouble.
Austin is nowhere near as lucky as their hosts when it comes to injuries. Their manager Josh Wolff has plenty to contend with in this department.
Hector Jimenez is out with the medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury he sustained in the 2-0 loss to LA Galaxy. Joining Jimenez in sitting this one out are long-term absentees Ben Sweat, Ulises Segura, and Aaron Schoenfeld.
Sporting Kansas City vs Austin FC Prediction
In current form, it is hard to make a case for Austin. They’ve no goals in their last three matches and only two goals in their previous five.
On a slightly positive note, Austin has conceded just 5 goals this time, showing that they are nobody’s walkover.
In contrast, Sporting KC has won four of their last five matches, scoring 11 goals in the process. Across those five matches, they have conceded 5 goals though, showing their defense isn’t totally watertight.
The Austin squad is seriously being tested to its limits during this current injury crisis though. So with this in mind, I have to go for Sporting Kansas to win this match.
I don’t expect it to be a landslide win for Kansas, I’m looking at a tight affair, with Sporting winning it 1-0 or 2-0. And at odds of -133.3 on Kansas, that looks to be good value.
With Austin matches been such tight affairs, I’m slightly surprised to see Under 2.5 goals at +100, with Over 2.5 at -137.50.
Sportsbooks must believe that the more open style Sporting Kansas plays in, will take precedence over Austin’s more cautious approach.
