When will sports betting be made legal in Texas? That’s the $1 million question so many folks have on their minds. The fact that it’s taking this long is a bit of a joke and has many frustrated. Well, to no surprise, Mark Cuban joins the group in support of Texas sports betting, as the Dallas Mavericks owner is simply sick and tired of waiting for news in this US state.
In a recent interview with LegalSportsBetting, Cuban didn’t hesitate in showing his support for legal sports betting making its way to the Lone Star State. As the owner of the Mavs, Cuban understands just how big of a venture it would be not only for the city of Dallas but all the major cities in Texas as well. Think about it for a second. Texas is one of the biggest places in the United States.
With that said, they’re behind in terms of legalizing sports betting. Instead, and this shouldn’t come as a stunner, but the state’s citizens are now having to either leave the state to neighboring places to make their bets, or they’re simply just getting things done illegally. Why is this still the case for so many people? The discussions being held should lead to this no longer being the case.
This is a blow to Texas’ economy as well and it’s something that needs to change in the near future. On top of that, if the Mavs, Houston Astros, Dallas Cowboys, San Antonio Spurs, and other teams end up pairing up with major sportsbooks, it will change the betting landscape. We already saw Austin FC do that this year, as they reached a head-turning deal with PointsBet.

Mark Cuban isn’t the only owner in Texas who wants to see a change
As you might have been able to guess, Mark Cuban isn’t the only owner in Texas who wants to see a change here in the near future. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones voiced his displeasure with the current betting laws and really didn’t hold back with his assessment of things. With the way things are changing in sports, especially the NFL, Jones understands why there’s so much desire for wagers to be made.
For Jones, he knows that millions and millions of dollars are being left on the table every single day that sports betting doesn’t move forward in Texas. At the same time, millions of dollars are being exchanged illegally with people making their non-legal bets. This needs to be regulated and can’t continue in its current format. Jones, Cuban, and others are ready to see things go forward and for the better.
“I certainly know that gambling as it pertains to our games is here,” Jones said earlier this year when asked about sports betting potentially making its way to Texas for the fans to enjoy. “Frankly, it’s been here. Yes, I do (see gambling being a common thing). The handwriting’s on the wall. Gambling has been here a long time.”
As you can tell from the quote above, Jones is incredibly passionate about getting sports betting to Texas. For him, there’s simply no excuse as to why folks have to go to neighboring states to hit up casinos to get their bets in, while also checking out the Las Vegas sportsbooks for different NFL odds, NBA odds, and more. It’s simply nonsensical from a business standpoint. When will the lawmakers wake up?

What’s to come for Texas sports betting?
As we know you’re probably wondering, people, want to know what’s to come for Texas sports betting? That’s really a hard question to answer right now, as things feel like they’re a bit up in the air. There was hope that things would be passed in 2021, but the opposite was true and the people at the forefront no question dropped the ball in the biggest way imaginable.
Because of legislation not being passed by the May deadline in the spring, folks are now going to have to wait until 2023 at the earliest for there to be a change in things. We understand how frustrating this is for folks, but that’s just the way things have rocked this year. With that said, there’s hope for the future and several people in power are ready to help out the cause.
With the bad news coming in earlier this year in the spring, people like Jones and Cuban are ready to try and kick things into the next gear for the next available chance to get things given the green light. As we mentioned above, that will now come in 2023 at the earliest. That’s when people will have the chance to change the laws and potentially get their bets in peacefully.
We’re talking about the kind of venture that could really make a huge financial impact across Texas. People want to see this happen and fast. If you ask Cuban, there’s simply no reason for more than half of the US states to have sports betting legalized, but Texas is way behind on the plans. We’ll see what can get done here. Obviously, people are counting down the days for 2023 to arrive for some changes to come.
