Could another change be coming for Texas Longhorns football? Last season, former head coach Tom Herman was fired after things simply didn’t work out in Austin for him. It was a major disappointment, as the expectation was that Herman would be able to get Texas to be a major powerhouse again. Now, Texas football fans are betting big on Steve Sarkisian to be fired as well. Goodness me.
It goes without saying, but the 2021 season has been incredibly underwhelming and the Texas sports betting fans think that the man known as Sark could be on his way out in the near future too. The Longhorns entered the season with major promise, as the expectation was that the team would be able to keep making improvements and compete for a Big 12 title. That’s not going to happen.
Despite recording a win over Kansas State to close out the regular season, the Longhorns closed out the year with a 5-7 record. This means that they failed to reach the six victories needed to become bowl eligible. This is a major embarrassment for the program and it has countless students, alumni and key boosters furious with the coaching staff. Of course, this means that Sarkisian is getting a lot of hate.
While this may have been his first year with Texas, no one thought the Longhorns would be held to just five wins. Coming from Alabama and working under the one and only Nick Saban, everyone thought Sarkisian could bring a winning attitude to Austin and power his group of players to some headlining wins. To go 5-7 in Year 1 sure is stunning. Now, Sark could be on his way out of town as well.

In some bad news for him, Steve Sarkisian has the second highest odds to be the next coach fired in college football. According to the best online sportsbooks, Sarkisian is currently listed at +300 to be canned in the near future, with people checking out the best NCAAF betting sites to get wagers in. The only coach who has higher odds to be fired right now over Sark is Miami head man Manny Diaz.
We’ve seen crazier things happen and it actually wouldn’t be shocking at all if Texas wants to make Sarkisian one and done in this case. Things really reached a low point for the program earlier this month when Texas suffered the shocking loss to the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas hasn’t had success in football in a long, long time. They’re consistently recording losing seasons.
However, they were able to head to Austin and beat Texas 57-56 in what turned out to be an overtime thriller. It was a result that no one saw coming. As soon as that loss occurred for Texas, thousands of folks were calling for Sarkisian and his coaching staff to leave town. Losing to Texas is just inexcusable for a program of Texas’ caliber. This was once one of the most feared teams in the country.
And now they’re losing to squads like Kansas? It is inexcusable. People are still talking about it and that’s not good at all for Sarkisian. His future with the team is completely up in the air as things stand. He was fortunate that Texas was able to close the season out with a win over Kansas State. However, this team is still not going bowling and that’s a big letdown for all the fans who wanted to attend one more game.

Other college openings could impact the Texas football decision
Another thing to strongly consider here is that other college openings could impact the Texas football decision on what they end up doing with Sark. Already, Washington, LSU, Florida and others have announced decisions to part ways with their coaches. This has led to constant rumors floating about where guys might end up going. For Florida, Billy Napier has emerged as the favorite.
With LSU and Washington, those are incredibly attractive jobs as well. LSU just recently won the National Championship, but this is Ed Orgeron’s last season with the team, as it was announced earlier in the year that the two sides will be parting ways. Meanwhile for Washington, where Sark used to be the head coach, they fired Jimmy Lake midway through the season. It was quite the move by the Pac-12 school.
With so many high-caliber openings, Texas could either wait and see how Sark does in Year No. 2, or they could pull the plug now and try and land a stud coordinator before one of the other major schools mentioned above lands him. It will all come down to what the officials think would be best for the program moving forward. A lot of people want to see what Sarkisian can do in the long haul.
It goes without saying, but he can quiet a lot of people down if he closes out the 2022 recruiting class with a bang. Of course, landing a 5-star prospect or two would be major for the program. Only time will tell if Texas decides to stick with Sarkisian or fire him for a fresh start. Texas football fans can’t wait to see what happens here.
