The tide sure has changed in Formula 1 this season, hasn’t it? Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ dominant run in the sport is seemingly hanging by a thread. Given all that’s transpired after nine races this year, we felt compelled to update our best bets to win F1 championships at the season’s end, including the Driver and Constructor titles. There’s a lot to discuss so let’s get right into it!
F1 Drivers Championship Futures Pick
First thing is first, let’s take a look at how online bookmakers are pegging this championship hunt. As of the most recent Austrian Grand Prix, here are the top four favorites to win the drivers title:
It’s been a long time — and we mean long — since Hamilton has been this big of an underdog in this particular wager. It was only three weeks ago that the seven-time world champion was even money to win it all. Now? His betting line has dropped by +200 or so. Is Hamilton done for like oddsmakers and fans are hinting?
We never want to completely count out an all-timer like Hamilton, but it certainly feels like 2021 isn’t his year. It’s perhaps most noticeable in his language. After being smoked by Verstappen at the Styrian Grand Prix toward the end of June, Hamilton quipped “naturally, they (Red Bull) are just faster.” He’s used similar verbiage throughout the season and you can sense Hamilton himself is even doubting the car Mercedes brought to the table this season.
Speaking of which, Mercedes has been very open about the improvements (or lack thereof) to expect out of its car in 2021. The team has routinely said their full focus is on overhauling the 2022 model, not 2021. In a way, that closes the door on a Hamilton comeback, barring a disaster from Red Bull and Verstappen.
Yeah, we’re not betting that happens. With the much faster car and now hanging on to a 32-point lead in the drivers’ standings, Verstappen is the obvious betting pick here. The stars have aligned for the Dutchman and we’re riding that momentum to the bank.
Formula 1 Constructors Championship Futures Pick
Given the huge lead Verstappen has in the Driver’s standings, it should come as no surprise that Red Bull are also staggering favorites to win the Constructors’ Championship. Here are the current betting lines:
In the current leaderboard, Red Bull has notched 286 points, thanks in part to six outright victories (five by Verstappen, one by Perez) and 10 podium finishes. Mercedes — the seven-year reigning Constructor champions — are 44 points behind them.
If you read our betting pick before this, then you know exactly where we’re going with this one. Red Bull is the runaway choice to make. Hey, you gotta hand it to them, the car they co-built with Honda is a speed demon. That was on full display the past two weekends at the Red Bull Ring in Austria as Verstappen was virtually untouchable in both races on the “home” track.
And unlike Mercedes, Red Bull hasn’t stopped improving its 2021 whip. During the Austria weekend, the team was on the receiving end of deliveries for new components. You have to admire that despite their huge lead, Red Bull isn’t “letting up on the gas pedal” per se. Given that, you’d have to be crazy not to bet Red Bull here. Heck, might as well make it a parlay with Verstappen to win the Drivers Championship (since the odds are so lopsided on single bets).
How To Watch Formula 1 This Season
In the United States, ESPN and its family of networks is the exclusive home of Formula 1 all-season long. Every race, every qualifier, every practice is aired live by the network.
Of course, race days are Sundays. Due to the international nature of the sport, start times are typically bright and early for stateside folks. Here are upcoming races to keep an eye out:
- British Grand Prix — July 11
- Hungarian Grand Prix – August 1
- Belgian Grand Prix – August 29
Alright, you’re now “in the know” about Formula 1. But none of that means squat if you don’t actually take action and lay down a wager. If you’re looking to do just that, we’ve hand-picked the top online sportsbooks for F1 betting. You can find that group below.
Before we let you go, we have one more must-know betting tip for you: take advantage of sign-up bonuses. These are special deals aimed at first-time players and almost every bookmaker offers at least one. As the name hints, it’s a bonus given out upon registering an account (and funding it with your own money).
How much exact money you insert into the brand-new account will determine how lucrative your bonus is. And believe us, if maxed out, the bonus really is lucrative. Look at the table underneath for a frame of reference. Those dollar figures you see (e.g. $2500)? Yep, that’s the max bonus currently on the table.
Not only are the bonuses hefty, but they’re quick to redeem also. Like we covered earlier, it’s a two-step process. It takes a matter of minutes and a few short clicks to unlock the bonus. Do that and you have free play at your disposal to wager on Formula 1 or another sport of your choosing!
