Benfica on the Brink

Benfica is on the brink of earning its first Primeira Liga crown since 2019, and victory over Santa Clara this weekend would confirm that success.

The Eagles need three points in its final match to secure the Portuguese championship clear of rivals Porto, although a draw should also suffice given Benfica’s vastly superior goal difference.

Last Sunday, Benfica had the opportunity to clinch the Primeira Liga when it took on Sporting Lisbon but saw a four-game winning streak come to an end. Trincao and Ousmane Diomande scored for Sporting to put Benfica in danger of its first defeat since the middle of April, but Fredrik Aursnes and Joao Neves scored in the final 20 minutes to salvage a draw.

This season, Roger Schmidt’s squad has shown resiliency on the road on multiple occasions, most notably when it rallied from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Champions League finalists Internazionale last month, but it will be the next 90 minutes on home turf that will determine the fate of their season. It is currently atop the Primeira Liga, two points clear of Sergio Conceicao’s Porto, which hosts host top-five contenders Vitoria de Guimares.

Benfica fans should certainly be confident ahead of this game. Their team has the strongest home record in the division this season, having won 14 of its 16 matches at the Estadio da Luz.

Santa Clara Set for Drop

Despite a mini-revival since the beginning of May, Santa Clara will face Benfica on Saturday knowing that its five-year tenure in the Portuguese top division will come to an end.

The Azorean team has won two of its last three matches, most recently a 1-0 victory over Portimonense thanks to a goal from Andrezinho. However, a 5-3 defeat at Braga nearly two weeks ago sealed its fate.

Danildo Accioly was given the task of saving the club back in February, but the recent revival came too late and it is not clear whether Accioly will keep his job when Santa Clara drops down to the second tier.

Either way, Santa Clara fans know they can’t expect much from this game against the league leader, particularly given that the team won just one league game on the road in 16 tries, scoring just eight goals, a league low.

Primeira Liga Head-to-Head

Benfica is one of the giants of European football while Santa Clara has done well to stay in the top division for five seasons, so it is no surprise to find that the head-to-head record between these two teams is distinctly one-sided.

The last time that Santa Clara beat Benfica was back in 2020, when it emerged with a surprising 4-3 win at the end of an entertaining game. That was a rare success, as Benfica has won seven of its last nine games against the Azorean team. Including the last three. The reverse fixture this season ended in a 3-0 win for the league leader after it raced into a 2-0 lead within the first 16 minutes of the game.

Primeira Liga Team News

If Benfica, as expected, claims the Primeira Liga on Saturday, it will do so without star player Julian Draxler, who is on loan from Paris St Germain and is still rehabilitating from a season-ending ankle injury.

Schmidt opted to replace Joao Mario with Alexander Bah at halftime against Sporting Lisbon, but the midfielder ought to keep his starting position as the Eagles seek to put the game to bed early on.

Santa Clara is likely to field a lineup similar to the one that defeated Portimonense last weekend, so Italo will likely partner Ygor Nogueira in the visitors’ defence. This is also likely to be the last game in a Santa Clara shirt for Matheus, who will be rejoining his parent club in Brazil this summer.

Primeira Liga Match Betting

The bookmaker odds do not lie. This is likely to be an extremely one-sided game and Benfica will want to sign off in style in front of its own fans. Not many bettors will be willing to wager on the home team at such short odds, so, away from the match betting market, going long on goals looks the best option.
