Sevilla Hope to Salvage Season

On its third manager of the season, Sevilla has fallen a long way from the heights of last year when it finished fourth in La Liga. A poor run of form saw the departure of Julen Lopetegui, but his replacement Jorge Sampaoli was not able to take the team back to the top six and he paid price at the end of March, with Jose Luis Mendilibar given the task of salvaging something from the season.

A 2-0 win in Cadiz was a good start, but Sevilla is still only four points above the relegation zone and given that it faces fixtures against Real Betis, Real Madrid and Real Sociedad at the end of the season, Mendilibar will want to ensure that his team is well clear of the drop zone before then.

With that in mind, the fact that Sevilla kept a clean sheet in Cadiz is a positive. It has the fifth worst goals conceded record in La Liga and has conceded three goals or more on six occasions, including a 6-1 defeat against Atletico Madrid, that may have hastened the departure of Sampaoli.

Celta Revival Continues

Celta Viga has also changed manager this season, but with much greater effect than Sevilla, as Carlos Carvalhal has masterminded a revival that has continued into 2023 and that has lifted the team from the relegation zone into the top half of the table.

Carvalhal’s team has put together a run of six games undefeated and has only lost twice since the World Cup break, with both games settled by a single goal.

The team is still seven points off the European qualification places, and that may prove to be a gap that it can’t close, but there is a genuine sense of optimism that a comfortable top-half place can be secured as a springboard to a good campaign in 2023/24. Much of that success has been built on a solid away record and that will give Celta confidence as it heads to Seville.

La Liga Betting Head-to-Head

Over the years, Celta Vigo has been able to match Sevilla in this fixture, and since the early 1990s, the head-to-head record shows 17 wins for Celta and 17 for Sevilla, with nine draws.

From 2017 to 2020, Celta was able to match Sevilla, winning three home ties against this opponent, including a 4-0 win in 2018. Since the 2020/21 season, however, Sevilla has dominated the fixture. Celt hasn’t won any of the last five meetings, though it has earned a draw in the last two.

This season’s reverse fixture came in December at the Estadio de Balaidos, and saw Celta take the lead through Gabriel Veiga, but Kike Salas equalized for Sevilla on 54 minutes and the visiting team was able to hang on for a draw despite Jose Carmona’s late sending off.

La Liga Team News

The team news for Sevilla is that they will be without four key players for this game. Karim Rekik, Papu Gomez and Marcao are all missing through injury, while forward Lucas Ocampos will sit out this game after earning a suspension following a yellow card against Cadiz.

Mendilibar has the option of selecting Fernando, who has completed his suspension, but it is more likely that the head coach will stick with the team that took the field against Cadiz. Erik Lamela is the likeliest replacement for Ocampos, although Oliver Torres and Suso are also options.

Celta Vigo’s injury list is also long. Augusto Solari, Agustin Marchesin, Oscar Mingueza and Diego Alves are all struggling with injuries that will keep them out of contention for this game, while Gabri Veiga is also unavailable after earning a yellow card in the last league game against Almeria. Renato Tapia is likely to take Veiga’s spot, while Haris Seferovic will probably start up front with Iago Aspas.

La Liga Match Betting Pick

Sevilla’s fall from relevance has been spectacular, but the priority for its new head coach in the short term is to tighten up on defense. That could lead to a cautious approach here, against an in-form team. Celta Viga has earned 15 points from 13 road games this season, while Sevilla has the fourth-worst home record in the division, so a draw looks the best pick in the match betting market.
